The first System Shock is a possibility for my summer challenge this year. SS2 was absolutely awesome, so I'm looking forward to giving the first one a spin. Does the original have the same horror bent of the sequel? If so, I look forward to getting under its skin.
In the meantime, I'm thinking about finally playing Bioshock.
What single player FPS campaign are you playing?

I mean if sneaking around in the dark avoiding mutants and berserk robots sounds familiar, it might be because System Shock 1 did it before 2 did.Ack wrote:Does the original have the same horror bent of the sequel?

And there's gore here and there too. Finding decapitated heads as you do.
I'd been thinking the same thing. I've never played it either.Ack wrote:In the meantime, I'm thinking about finally playing Bioshock.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I'd say that the first System Shock does horror better than SS2. The atmosphere in SS1 is amazing; you will not be disappointed on that front.Ack wrote:The first System Shock is a possibility for my summer challenge this year. I'm going to warn both of you, Bioshock's main connection to the System Shock games is the overall atmosphere of being somewhere run down that had a catastrophe happen before you got there. Mechanically it is much more shooter focused.

Actually that sounds a lot like my Tuesdays.Exhuminator wrote:I mean if sneaking around in the dark avoiding mutants and berserk robots sounds familiar, it might be because System Shock 1 did it before 2 did.

I know Bioshock is only spiritually related to the System Shocks. I've just had it sitting in my Steam account for years unplayed and figured I'd go and try to knock it out. It would have been in my summer stuff, but since it's only 9 years old, I didn't feel right keeping it in the mix for that.

Play it. Bioshock is one of the best new IPs of the last gen (IMO).

Anyway, Elkin, it's a horror game, so conserve ammo And never forget, you're a bigger monster than anything you'll face.

Bioshock 1 is all about wrench powerups and Houdinis. Then you become Predator/Wrenchlord of the Deep.
Bioshock 2 threw everything I could into the sentries and shotguns. I wasnt invisible but I was a wall of bullets with distractions.
Bioshock 3 I have not bought yet.

I've played 4 hours of Bioshock, and I lost my save so I'm not 3 hours into that same 4 hours. I know that's not much to go by, but I liked Bioshock Infinite a lot more. Granted, they are very different games. Bioshock feels like a horror game and is very enclosed. Infinite feels like... well, not a horror game.
