VGM Bonanziesta: A Collaborative Challenge --Entries Closed

Post by pierrot »

--That's a portmanteau of "bonanza," and "fiesta": "bonanziesta"!

It could be that people have already soured on the whole VGM fad around here, but I've been working on this for a little while now, and couldn't really let it go. This will likely only breath new life into the idea, or kill it for good; So, here we go.

This challenge is a little different from the quizzes before it: Research and sharing answers are encouraged, answers should be posted in the thread, points are not awarded. The objective is to be the first to provide a full, correct list of the 53 tracks, with game's title, platform (imperative that it's the correct platform), and track title (some leeway given for describing where the music plays in the game).

The first person to complete the list, and post it in the thread is the winner. As a trophy, that winner may dress up my profile in any way he or she wishes. The same prize will be awarded to anyone who can find the common thread through the 53 tracks.

I have a tentative time frame of one month in mind, and I would be shocked if there were anyone who could actually complete it on his own. So, cooperation may be a necessity. I do believe that, collectively, it's a completable task, but I could be coerced into giving some hints if it turns out to be too daunting. I reserve the right to give abstruse help, however.

Note: It pains me that not all of these files are in a "lossless" format, but others may have an inverse reaction. Hopefully people won't mind the size of the files, too much, and can live with using VLC for playback. Also, headphone users, beware of track 5.

Hopefully this is a fun exercise for people. The only thing I'm ostensibly prohibiting in reaching the answers is any program or application that matches the track for you, but it's really an honor-system, regardless.

Now I have the time to start listening to this! This looks really interesting and I love that most of you who have continued with the quizes have put in a twist or two in order to make things fresh. With that said though, I absolutely love a standard VGM quiz as well.

First off I will try this on my own, here we go!

There seems to be an issue with Track 32, by the way. Won't play, and file size is too small.

Interesting idea here. It's going to be a bit overwhelming... but we'll see how far I can go on this one!

SO INTO THIS. I don't care about being the "winner," I just want to contribute to the effort.

Did anyone ever go to the Challenger memorial space camps, where you each took stations in elaborate Mission Control and space station mock-ups? One or two people would be on CAPCOM, ISO, etcetera, all with their individual tasks to accomplish and strengths to bring to the co-operative effort?

Yeah. This is like that.

I did Student Space Station waaaay back when I was about to go into sixth grade. They selected various students from around the state to participate. I figure there were around 20 of us. Spent two weeks doing all sorts of stuff. Me, I wanted the task that put me on the computer, so I got to "dock" the shuttle to the station. This particular computer had some issues, though, and the software would freeze up... so I had to start my run again, with the timer still ticking away. I put that puppy in there with time to spare. Felt pretty good pulling that off even with the issues! :)

I'm glad there's some interest in this.

You are correct. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm not sure why I had it in that format to begin with. I repackaged the playlist with a working #32, and split it up a little bit more.

It seems at least one person has had trouble unpacking the archive in Zip format. I added a link to a 7zip archive of the track list, just to cover some more bases.

If anyone runs into any trouble with something else, please let me know.

Think you could upload file 32 on it's own? Really don't want to have to redownload a gig of data again

Here's #32:

Additionally, #38 is Anamanaguchi's "Mermaid" off their Dawn Metropolis album, aka one of the two of their songs featured on the Bit.trip runner soundtrack. Good stuff.

I went through and listened to all of it today. Sadly, not enough of it was older chiptune stuff, so this is going to be difficult for someone with my tastes.

I recognised a handful if it helps people:
23. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney/Gyakuten Saiban - DS/GBA - Pursuit/Cornered
24. Jet Set Radio - Dreamcast - Funky Radio
25. Cave Story - PC/Wiiware/probably others - Meltdown 2 (Sand Town)
And some thoughts I had on others which are probably wrong.
13. Reminded me of Secret of Mana
15. The instruments in this sound like the ones used in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on Gamecube, but I don't recognise the track
52. This is familiar and for some reason Lost Kingdoms jumped straight into my head. I can't find the track though so I guess I'm wrong?
I'm not patient enough to spend lots of time researching, so I hope this helps people out.
