I thought corralling enemies to one side was basic Beat 'Em Up 101.

...but then I started with Final Fight.

If the enemies didn't surround you, the game would be a cake walk. Attacking you from both sides is the only way the enemy can gain an advantage against you.

While I do think Streets of Rage 2 is a really good game, I think it's also way too easy in comparison to Final Fight. I was waiting for a friend of mine who works at a game store to get off work, and they had SoR2 in the demo unit. In the 15 or so minutes I waited for him to get off, I made it to the final stage and by the time he got off I hadn't died a single time. And I haven't played SoR2 (or any SoR) in at least 5 years.

What difficulty level was it set at? I'm pretty good at SoR2, but I'm not good enough to go deathless until... wait a sec, I think I did pull that off once, but it was a really good run. More often, you'll get some enemies and bosses into tricky patterns and you'll drop a life here and there.

Of course, if you jack that difficulty up, it really is tough stuff.

Yep. I started with Double Dragon, and I feel the same way as you. Keep all the enemies to one side so you don't get surrounded. You should figure that out the second time you play any Beat 'em up.

I really like the games that give you tools for taking out guys coming up from behind. I liked Double Dragon II's approach to the controls, where you could attack ahead and behind to take out threats.

Agreed DD2 with the forward punch and reverse snap kick cleared out losers who try to be sneaky. That said I can't prefer FF or SoR over each other, and I do own all 3 FF games on SNES (and #1 on GBA too which is fairly arcade accurate on the JP version I have.) You just have to learn how to move the fools so you're not trapped, works most the time, but you have to realize it's a quarter eater on the first one by design.

People typically compare Final Fight to Streets of Rage...which isn't really fair since Streets of Rage was released two years later. I think that the more apt comparison is Streets of Rage 2 and Streets of Rage 3 with Final Fight 2 and Final Fight 3. (I am certain that Streets of Rage 2 is better than Final Fight 2 and Streets of Rage 3; however, choosing between Final Fight 3 and Streets of Rage 2 is much more difficult.)

Also...is it weird that I prefer Double Dragon to every game in either the Final Fight of Streets of Rage series?

I agree with all of this, actually. After playing through Final Fight 3, it struck me how much of Streets of Rage they slipped in there. It's really solid stuff. I still think I'd probably take SoR2, but it's a close battle. And I still adore the first SoR, there's something about how it plays that I really like.

And no, it's not weird at all. I've always preferred Double Dragon overall. I love the diversity of the movesets in those games. Final Fight takes the opposite approach, going for simplicity and speed over depth. It's also why I like FF3 a lot, there's a bit of depth that's been added back in.

I feel this might be appropriate for the occasion:
