I've only played 6(US 3)through 12. My order would be:
1. FF6(3 in America)and FF7(tie)
2. FF X
3. FF 12
4. FF8
5. FF9
6. FF X 2
7. FF 11
FF X2 was a big dissapointment to me overall, although it did have a few cool gameplay ideas(like the new combat system, jobs and new game plus). I just couldn't stand the silly, stereotypically girly nature of the whole game and I firmly believe that FF X's story did not need a sequel in the first place.
FF 11 isn't even a real FF game

Ack wrote:Final Fantasy VI, which has easily defined my opinions of JRPGs. I really hate when a JRPG focuses heavily on one individual, to what I feel is the expense of all others, and I also like a large cast. I really loved that this game didn't spend the entire time focusing on one specific character, but went from person to person, emphasizing each one individually.
This sums up my feelings on FF VI pretty much perfectly

Re: Best Final Fantasy game? (in your opinion)
I'd go with Final Fantasy 6. I've played through the game around 6 or 7 times, and I never get tired of it. I can't really think of any one thing in the game that is the best in the best series. The story isn't the best and some of the characters are completely bland and a couple just seem like they were randomly thrown in there (Umaro and Gogo to be precise), but the game is just flat out fun IMO. Everything just works out to make an amazing game. Second honors would go to FFT.
I've enjoyed pretty much every game in the series with a few exceptions. I could do without Final Fantasy 5, and I definitely wouldn't be able to stomach another play through of Final Fantasy 8. Detached and depressed main characters really don't do it for me. I thought Cloud was pretty unbearable, but Squall took it to another level. I guess the fact that I found the plot completely contrived and very ridiculous, adds to my disdain for that game. I can stomach a game with mediocre characters and story lines if the game play is really good, but the game play wasn't anything special either.

Gee, I consider 6, 7, and 8 exemplary examples of what's horribly wrong with Final Fantasy and many other modern RPGs as well. I think 4 was my favorite, but 3 is pretty good, too.

Reading this thread makes me ashamed that I have never beaten a Final Fantasy game.

It's all right, I'd say they're generally overhyped.

Still 6 seems like it be a good one and well worth it. My brother thought 4 was the best if that's anything for you guys.

Final Fantasy VI has always been my favorite. The villian was great; he was completely batshit insane, which is a lot better than the subsequent villians of trying to "fix" things.
That, and the fact that you set out to save the world and FAIL.

Re: Best Final Fantasy game? (in your opinion)
I too haven't finished any titles in the main series to speak of. Started FF VII once, FF IX twice and FF 1 twice. I'm playing through FF1 again now, and I must confess, this game is so dull. I suspect this has to do with me never being a huge RPG buff (although I do have my favourites, they are mostly less traditional).
I'd love to hear how I'm misinterpreting this all, seriously. But I usually play FF1 while multi tasking with some other activity like reading stuff for Uni or something. The gameplay is so low impact that it feels like I just walk a few metres, press attack a couple of times and walk some more. What's wrong with me?

You don't have a wrong opinion of FF1. The story is extremely thin, but it was a very early JRPG. FF2 (NES) has much more of a story, and FF3 (NES) has the really impressive class system.
