It's definitely a classic, even if it's got a few warts. For the longest, it was my favorite in the series. It's certainly no more flawed than a lot of other non-linear action-adventures on the NES, and it was a wildly successful game.

Wow. I have never disagreed with you more than I do right now.

Castlevania 2 is not only a classic, but it's also the best Castlevania on NES.

Yeah, I'm honestly not really enjoying it so far just because of how unforgiving and grindy it is. I'm probably going to give it one more fair whack before throwing in the towel at it, but I like to give any SNES RPG at least a try, especially ones guys on here like so much (though I probably should've braced myself better just knowing what kinds of games Ack and Bones like compared to me), provided it isn't something like ShadowRun which I've seen the entire content of and know it's not a game style I like.

Also, speaking of SonSon and other "Jorney to the West" games, I'm playing Enslaved: Odyssey to the West right now, and it's sooooo fun. It's like if the newer Splatterhouse had more platforming and jungles with lots of color. It's my mission to hunt down Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom next, because that's another Namco Bandai cheapy of last gen.

OK...OK...I admit that it has some good ideas and some great music. I haven't played it in years, and my last experience wasn't great. It is also the only Classic Castlevania game I gave up on. Maybe I'm missing something. I will give it another shot sometime.

Sload Soap wrote:Flash, the thing with football management games is that they generally get better with each incarnation so it's hard to pick out a "classic" version. You could go with the original Football Manager for the C64/Spectrum or the first Champ Manager for Amiga. You could go super British and play a cricket or rugby game. Or just ISS 2000 which has an interesting career mode.

I won't be doing a list this year cos last year it was a bust. I hope you all have fun making lists, having Dave insult you, then playing other games anyway.
I wouldn't agree with that. I think the FM games used to have a much larger audience but have overcomplicated themselves in recent years. And there are some considered classics of the series.01/02 is super higly regarderd and Champ Man 2 also very important for shaping the series. I think it would be one of those 2 if I did choose to play... but I really can't do it... I can't afford to spend the hundreds of hours it will take.

I think you should give it another shot. However it's true that Castlevania II is quite divisive. I don't remember it being so wayyy back when it was first released. Everyone I knew who had it back in '88 were blown away by it, myself included. But I guess opinions change over time and whatever. My opinion never changed, I thought it was amazing in 1988 and I think it's amazing now. My only gripe is yes some of the NPC dialogue was intentionally misleading. But that's easily fixed with a patch.

Any of you guys play Vampire Killer? Seems like it's technically the "second" game in the series. Looks intriguing but I don't have an MSX2.

As for Castlevania II, I got it on FDS recently and am looking forward to it. It's not a Summer Challenge game for me only because I still need to beat the first one!

-Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic - Just play Super Mario Bros. 2 and don't be such a fucking hipster.
Ya know, I was trying to summon a wise ass comment, but you raise some good points here.

Hydlide II was admittedly a bit of a troll pick - I was waiting to see if someone would call me on it.

As for Doki Doki Panic, I've been itching to play it but the fact that I've beaten Mario 2 one thousand times would kill a lot of the novelty.

All this talk of Kid Icarus makes me think that may be a decent pick. I'd just have to buy a copy.

For the final game, I'm thinking something old would be nice. Tossing around a lot of ideas in my head - Popeye, Moon Cresta, Moon Patrol, or Scramble maybe...

Great game. Not too hard to "loop" it. No one can dispute its status as a classic.

I dunno. Have you met the other Dave?

I may go with it. I have it on 2600 and 5200.
