Advice on getting a PS2

I'm of the belief that since most PS2 fanboys have gigantic PS2 collections, we're not going to get rid of PS2 (and in some cases, like msyelf) probably won't upgrade to PS3 until Sony pulls their heads out of their asses and figures out software BC.

I hear you there man but at the same time when SONY annouced that they were dropping the 60 gig from production I ran out and bought one because I knew It was the beginning of the end for the PS3's BC. So far I love my 60 gig's BC but hardly ever use it due to having my PS2.

That's why I have like 20 PS2 games and no PS2. I got a PS3 but I never played it and didn't want to lose out on it's value so I sold it, all I used it for was Final Fantasy Tactics and Harvest Moon back to Nature, both PS1 games lol. It was a really nice system but I don't have high-speed here and I couldn't find much game play to really keep it.

This versions' model number is SCPH-5001, now the surprising thing about these models is that they feature all the conveniences of the slim models with the look and feel of the classic PS2. Said conveniences are near noiseless operation, the ability to read all burnable dvd media ( DVD-R DVD-RW DVD+RW DVD-RAM ) and all burnable cd media ( CD-R CD-RW ), remote power on using its built in ir reciever ( located between the power/reset and eject buttons ) the updated PS2 DVD remote with power on button ( the green button on most PS2 remotes that came without a reciever or install disc), a near indistructable disc drive I played dvds in mine foer years until I heard about disc drive problems and have yet to have any. Another thing is that these are the only large PS2 systems to not have the ubiquitous iLink port usually located on the front near the usb ports. I persnonally own one of these 5001 models and recommend it above all others if you can find one. These can also be destinguished by a plus sign in a little yellow box on the front of the cardboard box the system originally came in.

Didn't know about the remote power on the 5001. You did an impressive write up, this should go up on a guide. So I would say that the best PS2 setup would be a SCPH-5001 with an online adapter, set up with Freemcboot + hddloader + esr + sms. You could turn it on with the remote, go into hdloader play your game backups with faster loading and play some movies using sms.

I have 2 SCPH-3001 I think, one with a non working lens and one with a very faulty lens but with modchip. Both of them load freemcboot to hdloader using no discs. I just want a slim one to complete my setup and have a ps2 with a working lens. What model is the white slim ps2 bundled with singstar?

I've noticed that my green button on my remote WILL power the PS2 on. But strangely, it will not power it off. I wonder why they did that.

Try holding the button down for about 3-5 seconds. It pretty much requires the same time as it takes to turn off using the power button on the front on the console.

Mod_Man, I've confirmed that I do indeed own the 5001. I threw in an audio CDR, and sure enough it read it just fine! SO.... what can I do with CDR's now that I know this? I tried to burn IMBNES to a CDR, but I got the old red-screen 'Please-Insert-A-Sony-Disc' screen. My model is soft-modded, so it cannot run PS1 backups; and I believe IMBNES is PS1 Homebrew, so it reads as such. Just curious how much I can do with CDR's and if I need to burn them via certain format. Unfortunately, I don't have a DVD burner yet.

Shame on you, DVD burner are pretty cheap. Soft mod with ESR does not load CDR, just DVD. It basically making the ps2 think its a movie dvd. There are tutorials for that. Best way would be to get hold of the ELF file for your IMBNES (my guess its an emulator) and launch it via ulaunch elf on your memory card or usb stick or launch it directly on the freemcboot menu using the configuration option. You can have all your apps right there on the ps2 menu, all of them running off usb. Think its about 100 apps you can set up. In my case its just SMS, HDloader, ESR and Ulaunch. Hope that helps!

DVDBurners are getting cheap, but my wife and I have far more impending expenses. I'm well aware of how to use ELFs via USB. However, IMBNES is not an ELF... it's an EXE that builds a PS1 disc image. So that won't work. At any rate, I had always heard that PS2 don't read CDR, but then Mod_Man seemed to say otherwise about the 50001 model (which I own). As far ESR goes... I don't know what that is.
