Had a nice day in Yuma AZ over the weekend. Hit up the usual places. I took my dad with me today too. He got clothes and odd and ends for his house. And I got games and movies. I tried going to Hastings first but I went too early and they weren’t open yet. So I went to Salvation Army. They had a half off day. And although I didn’t find any worthwhile games stuff I got a Kung Fu flick for $1.25. Not bad. Next it was on to goodwill. I was saddened by the fact that today wasn’t ½ day. So I could have gotten more stuff cheaper. But I cant complain over some $2.00 PS2 games! Spiderman 3, Thunderstrike, Ben 10, Avatar, Incredible Hulk, and Ninja Turtles. I also got and model one genesis plug for $3.00. And not only did I pick up some games but some reading material too, Bone Vol 7 for $3.00, a random tokyopop manga for $0.99 and Metal gear 3 strategy guide for $3.00 too. Finally then made it to Hastings where I took in four bags of dvd movies that I’ve been picking up these last few months. And they gave me the choice of $90 cash or $142 store credit. This time around I got store credit. I didn’t get anything there. But I may just buy some stuff online later. Leaving Hastings I hit up two pawnshops nearby. I got pitfall for $2.00 and the second pawnshop I scored much nicer. The leftover dvds that Hasting’s didn’t take I sold them to that pawnshop. Ten dvds and one series became $15 cash. Which I then used instore to buy some videogames! Soul Calibur Legends wii, Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning PS3 and two dynasty warrior PSP games. My total there was $21.00 but in reality it was $6.00! I am happy to finally have SC Legends. It seems that game is less common than you think! I then decided to go farther out of town to another goodwill. This one is in Fortuna Foothills past Yuma. There, I didn’t find any games but I found a complete anime series! Karin. It’s an old Geneon series. Each one was marked $4.00 each but I asked really nicely to the cashier if I could have them all for $20 and she said yes. She called her manager and she just ended up not scanning one! Quite nice! Lastly, I was back in Yuma. I picked up some games at gamestop before leaving home. I got some PS3 games there. Kane and Lynch 2 and Red faction are cheapie games, but the better deal i got on Lost Dimension. I had a 20% off promo so that went down to $17.99! As the guy was ringing me up I asked him if they had any DS games with boxes (nope) or any steelbook games traded in (nope). But he ended up giving me a Steelbook case for free! He gave me a case for Quantum Break! He said that it was an extra one. And of course I took it! I’m very happy guy!

mas wrote:...my goodwill over price the stuff. How are you going to charge me 13.99 for soul calibur 2 on the ps2? And gta 3 and vice city each for ten? You got that for free
Dude, I think that to myself all the time.

Now I understand that thrift stores have an overhead too, but sometimes the prices are outrageous. I walked into the thrift store the other day and spotted a coffee table I thought would look nice. When I walked up to it, I saw the glass was missing from the coffee table. presumably, someone had broken the glass and that's why the coffee table was donated to the thrift store in the first place. While I was balancing the pros and cons of fixing the coffee table myself, I glanced at the price... $175. What!? Ya'll want to charge a hundred and seventy five dollars for a broken coffee table ya'll got for free? Are you nuts? That goes far beyond covering the overhead, don't you think?

Yup that's far over the overhead, but that's where we are now thanks to years of heavy top down gov't mis management and worse when both the pres and congress just a few years back were the same party. Lots of economic damage brings out the scavengers and scum to take advantage of anything and anyone.

Huh?

How the heck is it Congress's fault or the President's fault that my local thrift store wants to charge an absurd price for a broken coffee table?

I mean...don't get me wrong here...politicians are a bunch of jerks, no doubt. I just can't figure out how this particular bit of nonsense can be blamed on the government.

What kills me is the goodwills around here are getting lax about putting price tags on stuff so you have to drag everything up front wait in line 5-10 minutes and then wait for the clerk to call whoever is in charge so that he/she can pull a ridiculous price out their ass :P. $10 for loose possibly defective composite cables with no returns no thank you :P.

About the only time I get remotely decent deals there is when a particular color tag is on sale, but good luck finding someone who knows which color is on sale on a given day :P. Plus since they don't bother tagging half the stuff anymore it's almost impossible to find a deal.

Really I need to stop going in goodwill I end up regretting it every time.

Yeah, Goodwill is really hit or miss. Sometimes I'll find a good deal on a cd or movie (got an unopened Criterion bluray copy of Macbeth for $3. Sweet), but a lot of the used stuff I see in there is kinda... iffy.

In my opinion over-saturation of TV shows convincing everyone that their old crap is basically made of solid gold is the primary cause of this kind of insanity.

If it were the fault of a poor economy nobody would be making money with inflated resale prices because nobody could afford to buy anything and the people who could wouldn't be shopping at Goodwill.

The point wasn't some redneck garbage, our leadership made a lot of really stupid moves that ended up harming both the housing market and also business between the housing bubble blowing up to the ACA and businesses retaliating firing people and shorting hours. All this hardship from lost pay to no pay (laid off) causes people to search other means to make up that loss. I noticed and it's not even just gaming, but in general that shops like goodwill(thrifts) started getting picked over heavily as things got worse. People would go in and grab crap to sell, clearly not needs (like the clothes, cook ware, etc), and eventually it got to seeing people with phone scanning apps for barcodes or ebay/etc tool searches to flip junk and games being one of many things really targeted.

That was the point, not some lame redneck conspiracy theory crap. That's why goodwill is a bitch to find stuff at now. Interest in games, bad economy, scavengers looking to make a buck off traded in goods, everyone but the scavenger loses.

You combine in that point made next to my post about stuff from American Pickers to Storage Wars making everyone thing their bowling balls to their x-men comic from 1985 is worth a crap ton of money because TV said so and they didn't notice the real reason why didn't help either. But those shows too popped up really right along these problems as it fed off of it.
