If he plays it directly after RE4-RE6, the awful combat/controls stick out like a sore thumb, and the plot/characters are the absolute worst in the series. I give it no leeway for originally being a handheld game. No excuses here, I hate it and it was really painful to get through. Oh did you want swimming sections in RE? Have fun with those too.
So I actually don't dislike tank controls, and while I admit that RE4 and 5 had more interesting combat than the previous RE games (in that it involved aiming rather than just hitting fire til the enemy falls down) I still don't think combat is RE's strong suit; it should rather be an obstacle like the puzzles are obstacles.

I for enjoyed Revelations on 3DS enough that I bought the sequel on PS3. Haven't played it yet, but I plan to via co-op, once I finish RE6. RE6 is a beast to get through though.

I'm surprised you like RE6 over RE5. Like I've been saying in this thread RE6 isn't that bad in my book... but that game is the definition of utterly drawn out. Toss in Ada's campaign and it probably takes about 20 hours to get through the game. When there is no gun customization, any good collectibles, or anything outside of the bare bones gameplay, it definitely wears thin after awhile... but then just keeps going. The various running QTE parts were awful though, think Chris had 2-3 that were pretty frustrating.

Yeah I plan to check out Revelations 2 sometime. Looks pretty cool.

I also just wasn't a fan of the boat setting in Revelations. But I guess some people like it.

I haven't played the first Revelations yet. But I did enjoy the second.

I wont go on in detail about how annoying I find them, as it seems many people agree. I endured them when I played the game on the Wii. But some of them are broken in the HD PC version! The two that I've come across are when Leon has to pull himself up (or fall to his death) after the mine cart and giant robot Salazar parts. It seems that no matter how fast you mash the key, he always falls.

I found a Steam thread that a lot of other people have this problem as well. One solution that apparently works is to change the FPS from locked 60 to locked 30. But you can't do that in game, only at the main menu. So you'd have to exit your game and then replay from your last save point. Luckily, another trick is to start mashing the button BEFORE the button prompt appears on screen. This has worked for me both times, but only after dying a cheap death a number of times.

QTE really cheapen RE4.
Yes, I hated the QTEs in RE4, but I think they were possibly broken in the original PC version too (not just the HD version)! The PC version was the first version I had and played, but I ended up giving up and buying the GameCube version, because those QTEs just did not work on PC no matter how fast I mashed the right button.

Much less do I like than the QTEs themselves is having to pound the buttons on my ~$130 keyboard!

I've played Revelations on both 3DS and Wii U, and I honestly preferred it on the 3DS. Something about using the gyroscopic controls in the 3DS to aim just felt so fluid to me (not to mention that it was remarkable to see how much power Capcom was able to squeeze out of the system).

so apparently there's some leaked info that says that RE7 will be coming out Q3 or Q4 of 2016.

I doubt that. I can see 2017, but with a series as big as Resident Evil (and one that's struggled with recent titles like it has), I imagine they'd give a bigger window to build hype.

Also Gamestop has started taking pre-orders for Resident Evil 5 on PS4 (and I imagine Xbox One, but I didn't look). As far as I can tell, however, no other retailer has.

well I guess they have hinted at 'big things' happening between now and March - March being a 20th anniversary. We already know about Umbrella Corps and the RE2 remake, so there's rumors that RE7 will happen in that time frame. I wouldn't rule it out exactly. It's been a while since 6.
