Finished this one shot OVA from 2003 today. Here's a synopsis from MyAnimeList:

"Early Reins features six beautiful women on a train en route to Sunshine Hill in the early 1800s. When the train is highjacked by robbers and the soldiers on board are caught unawares, another surprise is in store: these lovely ladies can fight! The heroine emerges as Margarette, a young woman determined to become a sheriff although she is somewhat lacking in experience. She gains plenty on this trip, however, and the ragtag team of Western warriors joins forces with another passenger, Spencer, to fight some nefarious bandits and guide the train to safety. "

I appreciated two things about this OVA. One, it uses a western theme, a rather rare genre for anime. And two, the heroines were never sexualized or portrayed as incapable eye candy. I'd go so far as to say this is feminist western anime even. Being a big fan of westerns, this was a treat for me. I liked that the guns and steam train were meticulously detailed and mechanically used realistically, and the twist ending. I had fun with this one.

True, it still kinda winds up being the art film kinda thing...but there's a ton of spectacle to go along with it.

Also good to have seen if one plans to watch the Rebuild movies, since those are more Groundhog Day than reboot.

Continuing on with exploring Amazon Prime offerings, I just finished off Princess Tutu this week. If I had to sum it up in one word, I'd have to chose: delightful. It was just an adorably entertaining show. It looks good, it's funny, it's got a nice story, decent pacing and to top it off, the dub doesn't suck. It's cute, but it's not too cute and, true to typical fairy tale fashion, gets a little darker towards the end. After sitting through Ghost Hound, this was a vast improvement. This is something I enjoyed so much I might end up buying it.

If you've got Prime, enjoy fairy tales, magical girls and don't mind the inclusion of the ballet elements (which I thought were very scaled back considering the title), than this is a pretty solid choice for some more relaxed viewing.

I just read that Amazon got the rights to this and will be airing it once a week for Prime members. The clips I watched looked pretty good, so I'll definitely give this one a go. Hopefully I'll enjoy it, which would mean I'd actually have something to watch this summer

Depends on the show. Princess Tutu was dubbed, but when I watched Ghost Hound it was subbed and Kabaneri indicates that it's going to be subbed.

If it's subbed, it'll usually say so somewhere in the title or description.

Thats one thing I never cared for as far as Prime goes most of their anime is the dub and I don't think there is a subs option available unless I missed it. Netflix is a lot better for providing both sub and dub versions in a variety of languages usually.

As for Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress the first episode was good enough that I'm probably going to watch it again tomorrow after work. It was probably one of the best opening episodes I've seen in quite a few seasons.

Angel Cop / 6 eps OVA / produced from 1989-1994

Here's an anime I saw for rental in both Video Warehouse and Blockbuster when I was a teen, but never bothered with. I guess I figured it was just a sexed up cop show, judging by the cover you see. Turns out that Angel Cop as a name is entirely misleading, because her character is actually only one of at least four main characters. And she's never really sexualized at all in the OVA the way she is on that cover art.

Anyway, Angel Cop has a fairly complex story. It encompasses political espionage, cybernetic war machines, psionic super soldiers, gumshoe detectives, terrorists, and a whole lot more. I guess the best thing I can say is somehow the plot ties all that stuff together in a way that actually works. I really enjoyed the first four episodes, but the last two looked like the budget seriously got cut, with the final episode a real let down from a production perspective. I still enjoyed the plot resolution however. If you're into dark and violent anime with zero kawaii factor, Angel Cop has you covered.

Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 / 1 eps OVA / released 1987

MADOX tells the story of a high school kid who accidentally ends up in possession of an experimental military mech (MADOX). Rather than return it to the military or use it for something purposeful, instead the kid decides to impress his ex-girlfriend with it. The military of course is having none of that, with one particular tank soldier going crazy in an attempt to destroy the MADOX itself. A whole lot of mech battling action occurs as a result, with apache helicopters and other MADOX mechs joining in. What starts off as a cool mecha OVA eventually turns into a love story (yuck!), but I didn't mind too much. Mainly because the opening animation sequence for this OVA is the stuff of legend, totally justifying the existence of Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01 on that sequence alone.

I used to own that Madox 01

Used to watch the shit out of it.

It's one of the earliest anime I've owned on VHS.

Bought it for a few bucks used at a rental store.

Thankfully it still had the box.

Pretty self contained story. Resolved in one episode.

Like all OVA from back then.

Stuff like this was a labor of love back then. And by labor a cheap workforce that produced high quality animation for its time.

I miss old days like that in anime.

I wish I still had my old copy. I had it up till about three/four years ago. My mom found my milkcrate full of vhs anime and promptly set them out on the curb.

I watched that one a few years ago, I don't remember a whole lot about it though. I remember enjoying it, but the show never got as dark and dramatic as I expected it to. Still totally worth watching just because the subject matter isn't typical anime plot 101. If you do enjoy the show, you might enjoy this:
It gets pretty openly dark during the last few episodes :P. The rest of the time it has pretty dark elements but they are mostly in the background or not directly tied to the main characters.
They essentially pull a 2 "dream sequence" deaths for the younger brother. Then the sister wakes up and things are okay for the next episode or two before it's revealed that she has basically been hallucinating and her brother died of heat stroke a few days ago :P. After the whole hospital scene I kind of figured he was dead but I wish they had just kept hinting as opposed to revealing it. Rest of the dark stuff has been pretty subtle like a dog walking by in the back ground with a human hand in it's mouth and etc.
Finsihed it not quite as depressing as Grave of the Fireflies but it's up there.

Here's the last three OVAs I've watched:

Image
Nasu: Summer in Andalusia | 2003 | 1eps OVA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nasu:_Summer_in_Andalusia

Pretty good tale of a professional Spanish cyclist disregarding common sense, and going all or nothing against his whole world during a routine race. Highly decent animation and production values. 8/10

---

Image
Rescue Me! | 2013 | 1eps OVA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rescue_Me!

Really awful ecchi with a plot that does nothing to justify its countless shameful scenes. Fails as a comedy with worthless animation. 2/10

---

Image
Domain of Murder | 1992 | 1eps OVA
http://myanimelist.net/anime/4756/Hello ... no_Ryoubun

Rather decent murder mystery about a PI trying to solve the seemingly evil actions of an apparently insane father. Has some illogical plot twists, but overall was a good time. 7/10
