I haven't played Dark Souls yet, but here is my personal comparison of Demon's Souls and King's Field IV:

atmosphere - Demon's Souls = King's Field IV
art direction - Demon's Souls > King's Field IV
boss encounters - Demon's Souls > King's Field IV
challenge - Demon's Souls = King's Field IV
combat - Demon's Souls > King's Field IV
controls - Demon's Souls > King's Field IV
crafting/experience/upgrade system - Demon's Souls > King's Field IV
exploration - King's Field IV > Demon's Souls
immersion - King's Field IV > Demon's Souls
NPC interaction - Demon's Souls > King's Field

Despite some similarities, they are actually pretty different experiences. Accordingly, I would hesitate to say that Demon's Souls or Demon's Souls does everything better than one or the other.

I appreciate that breakdown, but you still didn't answer the metroidvania question. How do the two compare in that fashion? I mean I heard Demon's Souls works off a hub system. Does Dark Souls do the same?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Dark Souls takes it a lot further than Demon's Souls in that the world is meticulously layered and interconnected. It's a true Metroidvania as opposed to a hub system.

Agreed. King's Field IV is much more "metroidvania" than Demon's Souls (which actually felt a bit like Mega Man...).

Do you happen to have an Xbox 360? I think I'm going to get Dark Souls III for the XB1 and I can give you the free Dark Souls code for Xbox 360 if you want.

EDIT: PM fail! Oh well.

Thanks for thinking of me. I own the game for the PS3; I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I need to beat a King's Field so I can slap Exhuminator, I predict he'll never get around to the Souls games. :P

When I make the Castlevania comparison with Dark Souls, I do mean it in a Metroidvania sense as well. In a 3D space, it does it better than anything that's come out in the last two gens and just frankly, period. You can even sequence break and speedrun the games, which to me in a roundabout way is a testament to awesomely intricate level design.

But yes like I've been saying to everyone and others mentioned above, don't go into Demon's expecting that. On the other hand some of Demon's levels are more memorable, because they are arguable larger than the broken up levels in the other games. There's less areas, but they are really big and expansive, just more linear.

The art direction and enemy designs is something to really praise in these games as well. I don't even care for medieval fantasy much, but this is about as different as it gets compared to boring stuff like Skyrim or other generic things. The Souls series feels a lot like Berserk to me.

Dark Souls 3 is sounding kind of samey but that's not a bad thing. It's a Megaman NES level formula to me so I could play these forever haha...

I own Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls II on PS3. So that's a good start. I might say the hell with it and play Demon's Souls this year, despite wanting to finish Shadow Tower and Shadow Tower Abyss first. What I want to know right now, is between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls, which one is harder?
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I'm planning on skipping 2 and going to 3 given the black sheep status 2 seems to have because I don't want to completely burn myself out. It's not like From Software is known for it's sensible storytelling so I'm not afraid of missing anything.

I've still got dozens of hours to put into the first Dark Souls though so I'll grab it on sale in the future.

Here's an unpopular opinion - Sonic Boom isn't that bad (see my review in the Games Beaten 2016 thread for my reasoning).
