It's really... low key, casual, minimal energy at times haha, but there is some charm into that and its simplicity. It could grow on you with some cool moments and the characters are awesome. Getting through the series and OVA's made me like the movies ever more, since then I knew the characters so much better. That was my experience with GITS as well, I liked the movies way more after getting through Stand Alone Complex.
I started buying them to watch, so just the first Blu-ray set so far. I have the DVD versions of the movies because the fancy collector's boxes were dirt cheap like 2-3 years ago for some reason, and I liked those when I watched 'em.

Saying the ending of Evangelion got weird is like saying the surface of the sun is a bit warm.

Yep, KissAnime is a fantastic resource for watching anime online. They've got a lot of rare OVAs that I couldn't find anywhere else, not retail or even torrent sites.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (Koutetsujou no Kabaneri) just started airing today. I would basically sum it up as a more steampunk Attack on Titan just with super armored zombies and a heavy emphasis on Trains traveling between the strongholds. Episode one was great and I highly recommend checking it out.
Its the same studio as AoT so the animation is similar but much improved in my opinion. The pacing is also a hell of a lot better and I really hope they keep it up. Episode 1 was great it was pretty gruesome but they got straight into the action unlike AoT where there was a pretty long setup.

I've seen the NGE TV series and its follow up movies. While I am not a fan of the series, I still think you should see "The End of Evangelion", which replaces the final two episodes with material that is more gratifying:
"The film is divided into two episodes: Episode 25': Air / Love is Destructive and Episode 26': My Purest Heart for You, Sincerely Yours / ONE MORE FINAL: I need you. They effectively replace or coincide with the series' controversial final two episodes with a more "real world" account of the story's apocalyptic climax" - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_End_of_Evangelion

EoE is actually an ending, but it's still pretty insane.
