I beat this only a couple months ago myself, and while it is a GREAT game, like one of the best JRPG's ever, I don't think I can justify the time to go through it again so soon with so many other games juggling right now. (7th Saga ain't gon' beat itself :I)
And yeah, college finals and final projects, that other thing that's absorbing life right now.

I identify everyone via avatar, so if you change your avatar, I genuinely might completely forget who you are. -- Me

I remember beating Lufia and The Fortress of Doom way back when. I have II but I haven't played it much... I look forward to sitting down and playing it!

Re: Together RPG - Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals - 4/01-6
Whoa. I may have to play along with this one, I've only beaten it once. A top 5 SNES RPG on a system loaded with great ones
Re: Together RPG - Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals - 4/01-6
Since I'm playing through Lufia & The Fortress of Doom in honor of us playing Lufia II, would you guys prefer I write up my thoughts and experiences here or in the RPG Progress Report thread?

I think in here is fine.

Very well then, I'll get this party started.
Lufia & The Fortress of Doom
I took Friday off, finished up a game I was playing, watched a movie, and then began my assault on the first Lufia. I've beaten the second, which is actually a prequel, so I'm fully aware of the events that set the stage for the first game. This has led to some bittersweet moments, as I learn what has happened to the world in the wake of Lufia II's events. I am so happy I played these out of order; otherwise the impact would have been lost. Running into old characters or learning about ancient weapons that I previously wielded is more than a little rewarding, even if I'm sometimes struck by the tragedies which came with victory.
Anyway, reminiscing aside, I'm having a blast. I played through most of the weekend. Now the Hero is about level 25, and I have the full party. I've just been to the Elf city and am now in a city full of chefs;currently I'm about to construct a bridge so I can access a magic city full of mages where a scientist I need to meet resides. I plunged down through the first five levels of the Old Cave, and I can access the 6th, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
The combat system has occasionally led to some gnashing of teeth, but I've grown to appreciate targeting groups as opposed to individual enemies. The lack of carryover of attacks onto new targets means I've been forced to pay attention in combat far more and develop strategies on the fly, even when fighting enemies that have no chance to defeat me. Even though I'm just pressing the fight button a lot like in so many other JRPGs, I'm spending more time actively participating in combat instead of zoning out. I think this is a part of the reason why I have thrown myself so hard into the game; I'm actually playing instead of just on autopilot.
I do have a few complaints, one of which is the lack of a dedicated status screen to see stats, current experience, and experience needed to level up. All of that information is accessible in various menus or when winning a fight, so it's not a total necessity, but it would have been nice to have a one-stop shop for that kind of thing, just for convenience sake. I will get by without it though. The bigger complaint is about items, namely because I have no way of identifying what they do. Spells get descriptions, but items don't? This seems a grievous oversight. Still, if that's my biggest complaint, I'm doing ok. The story is a bit rushed at times too and perhaps a little lost in translation, but I've played far worse on this console.

So given that you did a pretty big marathon of it, how did you fight the duel in the tower? I remember when I first played the original Lufia that was a major sticking point for me.

The one-on-one with the Apprentice? I actually used a sleep arrow and knocked him out for a few rounds. I then did the whole Power Gourd/Drain combo and just wailed on him until he started using potions every round. Since I was doing more damage than he was healing, it was just a matter of time.
Admittedly I've also been sticking to my leveling rules for JRPGs, which has resulted in me being a bit over-leveled I believe. Any time I notice that a character is within ten average encounters in an area of leveling up, I stop and grind it out. This often causes other characters to get within ten encounters, so I just keep going.

Ahhh, that'll do it. I think I was more average leveled (I just fight whatever I run into, don't run from anything, try and get all the treasures) and I had to do some real grinding to get past him.
