VGM Quiz: Genesis/Mega Drive Edition! - THE RESULTS

Post by Key-Glyph »

Folks!

For this round of the Video Game Quiz, we have an all-Genesis/Mega Drive setlist comin' atcha. But there's a twist! These tracks have been placed in alphabetical order by North American game title, which will provide a foothold for those less comfortable in the Sega waters while simultaneously adding a bit of strategy for the blast processors among us.

If you hail from different regions which may have had other titles to these games, it's valid in my opinion to have a peek at Wikipedia to see the alternative names.

Please note three extra things.

One: I am a librarian, so if a game's title leads with "the," the article gets dropped and the game is alphabetized by the next word (e.g. "The Legend of Zelda" would be filed under the L for "Legend of Zelda, The"). Two: If a game's title has non-letter characters in it, pretend those don't exist and alphabetize by the letters only. Three: One of the games on this list was never released. I'm not doing that to be tricky; the song is just a complete jam and I couldn't help myself but share it with you all.

Here are the files: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/th30fad98b9x ... lu4Va?dl=0

Submissions are due April 11th, 11:59 EDT. That is only one week away! Plan accordingly!

Please remember to send answers via PM! Thanks guys.

I like the twist with the alphabetical order, I'm going to listen to this as soon as I do a longer session of Hearthstone. Perfect game for combining with tons of VGM-quiz listening :D

Is it valid at all to look at a list of Genesis games, or do we need to do this without that reference?

For a Ninty guy, I think I'm doing alright so far. :P

Hmm. I'd say if you're looking at a list of just titles, this could be okay. But if you'd be seeing any other information at the same time -- composer, company, date of publication -- then no.

alienjesus already sent in his answers! aj, feel free to look at a list of titles and add to your submission if doing so jogs your brain any.

Ninty guy. Heehee. I'm going to describe people this way going forward.

Question: Would you guys prefer knowing which track is from the unreleased game, or do you like its being an unknown wild card? I think it's neat not revealing it, because it has the possibility of being the Achilles heel of the alphabet system. But if that doesn't seem fair, let me know.

Oh, and I forgot to put an end date on this. I'll amend the first post shortly.

Ah, okay. I'll have to voluntarily scrap one of my answers for one, because I might have looked at a Konami release list before I asked. I doubt the guess was right, but... yeah.

EDIT: And... submitted! Your choice whether to scratch one of my entries or not, all the rest I did from the safest way I knew how, scrolling through my list of ROMs to remember game names. ;)

Personally I think it's part of the fun to dig around a little sometimes. If one recognizes that the composer has to be Motoi Sakuraba for example, but don't know the song itself it's probably from a game that you haven't played but a list of Motoi's games could help out some. It adds another layer to the quiz in that it isn't only about having played the most games but also being able to listen to the music and being able to narrow down the possible answers.

Of course if the author of the quiz think this is cheating it is, I just wanted to pitch in my two cents on the matter. :)

Just the alphabetical idea puts a nice twist of strategy. I think I ended up guessing something for every entry. I figure I knew about ten for absolute sure, and filling in the gaps was a little easier when your choices are constrained... not that I necessarily got those right!
