if you bring the girl to the exit, she gives you an extra heart.

Re: April Spelunky Daily Challenge Tournament (Steam) - Week
Is there always a safe way down? I was at a point where I didn't see any options other than a long drop (which cost me a heart). It was only stage 2 and would have required prob 3-4 bombs to go an alternate route - so that seemed to me it wasn't the best way. Also - bad idea to bomb the shop keeper and steal all his stuff.

Did you do the tutorial levels Mike? If you have any rope press down and y on a ledge to drop rope down.
Re: April Spelunky Daily Challenge Tournament (Steam) - Week
The levels are randomly generated, so there may not be a safe way down without an item. There are many items though that would help there. Parachute, jetpack, rope, bombs, climbing glove, etc.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

Re: April Spelunky Daily Challenge Tournament (Steam) - Week
so while I was doing some practice runs, this happened

moments later I was crushed to death. I knew the strategy, but I had no ropes left. I tried my best to bomb and guide him down but to no avail.
Still shaking. Just an unbelievable run.

"run"
So, admittedly I haven't done much with this - but when you say run, to me that means you can run through the game and conceivably beat it it in 45 minutes...is that accurate?
Yeah - the ropes...I didn't even think of that. I'm learning this one.
Also - any way to save your game? Or is that not needed? Like, after the tutorial I went to exit and it said all would be lost - I didn't see a save option. Do I need to do the tutorial every time?
I know these are stupid questions.

Re: April Spelunky Daily Challenge Tournament (Steam) - Week
Mike, these are not stupid questions. The reason people tend to not like this game is they don't understand what it is. The reason people love it is that they get into how it works. It's like a shmup in that regard - and in many regards. If you look at this game and think Super Mario Bros... you will die.
There is nothing to save. You wouldn't save in a shmup, right? A run is literally that one go at it. You're playing for survival - a 1CC, as you're only given one credit. Or you're playing for score. If you're good enough to beat the game - 16 levels - it will be in ~ 20 minutes. Seriously. Some levels take me 30 seconds. Others 3 minutes.
There are 4 "worlds" or groups of levels made up of like enemies/terrain. And there are 4 levels per world.
If you play for survival then you want to spend all your loot. You want mad bombs, ropes, a shotgun, a jetpack, etc. If you are playing for score - your money IS your score - then you need to prioritize. Obviously survival will play into score in that the longer you survive the more loot you can collect. But you have to decide how and when to spend your score on bombs, ropes, etc. Or maybe you choose not to at all.
Some things to consider -
If you bring a girl to the doorway that earns you an extra heart. This is like an extra 'life' in a shmup. Think of it as an extend.
You must have seen those traps that shoot arrows? Carry *something* at all times if you can. A rock or a pot or skull or whatever that you can use to trigger it.
As you found out, attacking a shopkeeper is a bad idea unless you know what you're doing.
Don't rush. That's huge. Take your time. BUT, don't doddle as eventually a ghost will come and kill you.
This might be obvious but the exit is always down. So try to think of it like you're exploring multiple planes, but always trying to move downward.
Just remember, score is money. The entire game revolves around the fact that every single move you make; every decision is a binary risk vs. reward.

Other than the ghost - is there any reward / penalty related to time?
So 16 levels - do they change each run? If the levels don't change - does anything on the levels change? Meaning, if this gold in the brick is worth $800 this time - is it always $800 in that spot?

Re: April Spelunky Daily Challenge Tournament (Steam) - Week
Literally everything is different every run. The levels change every single run. The whole point is that the levels change every run. The daily challenge is the same level for everyone every day though.
There's nothing attached to time for score though. Score is all money.
