Your kids have some serious play equipment. It looks like a public park back there!
Also, you are so lucky to have that many trees in your backyard.

He isn't overly aggressive, but he is very protective. He does go at the kids and my wife if they move quickly toward a hen, or if one of the hens cries out - he will come and do one violent peck - so yeah, the kids need to know where he is and be smart. We aren't cutting his claws or his spurs at this point - because we do want him to be able to fight off predators and he doesn't ever pursue any of us or animals - he is strictly a defender.Blu wrote: I hope your Rooster isn't aggressive at all, do your kids do well with him, or is he ever standoffish?

Yeah, that's what I'd be worried about -- obviously you have a good head on your shoulders so it's not surprising they take after you and your wife. Doesn't matter the age of the kid, it could be somewhat startling at first. But still, a rooster is a rooster and those spurs aren't anything to scoff at.
Interesting story, when I often look at wild turkeys, I see dinosaurs. Their vocalizations, their spurs, their feathers a distant form of scales. Their tiny brains, the way the walk, run to me when I scatter corn in their general direction during the starve of winter. As they rush towards me, I can't help but see the descendants of murderous death machines, bent on devouring me.
You should tell this story to them before bedtime. I imagine they might have a more cheery outlook on old Louis.
But seriously, I hope he continues to be fairly complacent and only defensive. I don't know if you have any foxes or coyotes around--they're all over the UP. But I'd be more worried about a pack of coyotes than a lonesome fox.

One of the things you should consider in building a chicken coop is the flooring. Raise the chicken coop off the ground by a foot or so to discourage rats, skunks and snakes from taking up residence beneath it and stealing eggs, chicks or even young hens. Be sure to keep the coop floor tight and patch any holes that snakes and rats can get through.

It didn't even seem odd to me until you pointed it out. I guess he likes chicken coops.

The coop floor is well protected. In a horrible twist of irony - a snake broke into my actual house and stole my neo geo games.

See dude, that's why you gotta elevate that flooring. Next thing you know, you're gonna come in and find a skunk playing all your shmups!mjmjr25 wrote:The coop floor is well protected. In a horrible twist of irony - a snake broke into my actual house and stole my neo geo games.
