Who uses a RGB Scart converter/adapter for Saturn?

Post by omer »

I currently use S-video for the Saturn on my HDTV...However I'm not pleased with the VERY noticeable "blocky" and "grainy" picture quality it gets on the HDTV. But the colors are great!

I was wondering. Who uses the Saturn RGB Scart cable but with a RGB/Component converter? If you do, please tell me where I could find a RGB Scart to component adapter, since my TV doesn't have SCART.

Is the sound quality better?

I use RGB SCART on my Plasma and my Saturn couldn't look better. I'm from the UK and we use SCART as standard for RGB 480i signals so no converter needed therefore purest and greatest picture possible.

I highly doubt the audio will be any better with a different cable, unless the new cable has better shielding. And the SCART won't help the blockiness, since you're running a 480i game in the early era of 3D on a 720p or 1080p TV. SCART should help with graininess, though.

not worth the time or money. A better way to make the Saturn look better would be a stand alone upscaler.

This is one of the most frustrating things about people buying TVs these days. They buy a cheap crappy HDTV and then complain when all their SD stuff looks like shit on it. The most valuable thing in a HDTV is it's upscaler. If the upscaler sucks ass then the TV sucks ass too. The only companies doing inbuilt upscaling right are Pioneer, Panasonic and to a lesser extent Toshiba with the new regza range.

Considering that most time spent with HDTV is still on SD content since not a lot of people have access to premium HD services. Especially not in the UK. A lot of people are turned off by the £100 upgrade for SKYHD over SKY+. A lot of areas don't have access to cable so they have little alternatives for HD broadcast. Buying just any old HDTV as 'upgrade' is completely pointless, it needs to be able to upscale SD content and it needs to do it well.

My 42" Panasonic Plasma upscales perfectly well and displays low resolution images really well over RGB. However it really shows up poor quality interconnects. Composite looks awful with ghosting reds and murky blues galore. RGB looks pin sharp.

The key word in this sentence is SONY. I've yet to find a SONY TV that was worth it's price. They all looks like shit, play SD content like shit and most of them only have 8-bit screens WTH?. Superior colour my foot. Not on an 8-bit screen, not by a long shot. Most decent screens are at least 10-bit. However increasing further than 10-bit is pointless since our eyes don't see the difference past 1billion colours. It just removes rounding errors and increases fidelity. The main gripe I have is the SONY bumph and marketing stating superior technology, when in actual fact many manufacturers use superior quality components (IE Toshiba/Samsung's 10-bit screens etc) at a lower price point than SONY most of the time. You are paying for a brand, a tarnished and inferior brand at that.

I use the Scart cable and the converter box and I think it looks fantastic. I'm pretty sure the results vary by TV, though. I have a sharp Aquos.

Those converter boxes are all over Ebay if you're looking to get one. Just keep in mind that you wont get sound out of it. To do that you need to get a little pass-through adapter that has stereo audio outs on it.
