Gamestop may have some real competition again

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

Gamestop may have some real competition again

Post by Mozgus »

Looks like Best Buy and Toys R Us will be doing the used game thing.

On the one hand, competition means that Gamestop will have to offer better trade-in values. Or at least one would hope so.

On the other, this means fewer people will buy new, and so the developer will make fewer profits.

Is this good or bad?

Toys r us dabbled in the used business years ago. I always felt like they were biting the hand that feeds them, in a way. But distributors are more than willing to deal with Gamestop, so I guess it's fair game.

Hmm...I'm intrigued, though it sounds like Toys 'R' Us doesn't really know what they're getting into. Still, if they're willing to take in anything, maybe they'll be selling it too. Hopefully we'll see more NES and SNES games at market...

My guess would be that the TRU and BB stores won't be buying used games and that they will get repackaged used games from a supplier and simply retail them like they do new games. I would also guess they won't sell used copies of games they also offer as new.

I can't get real excited about the news one way or another since I've never adopted any of the latest generation systems, my newest system is the PS2, so neither one has really had much I'm interested in for years now.

i cant imagine bb or tru buying used games... even harder to believe that they will be dealing in retro games as they seem to only carry the latest and greatest... i feel like they would have to really retool their staff if they were going to go that way... i worked at a best buy in the past and if it wasnt xbox or playstation related, my coworkers didnt know anything about it... i think they will probably rewrap returned games and sell them for 5 dollars cheaper like you see at fye and places like that.

Hopefully we won't, because more people will buy NES and SNES game and the demand will go up.

I don't see demand for those games going up just because they're made available, but if it's easier for people to get rid of those old collections, then there might be more available for us.

Circuit City tried used games too. Since TRU is only going to take games that are complete that will eliminate most potential customers. Plus, as someone mentioned, they don't deal with older games. It's hard to find 1st gen 260 games in a TRU so I don't see it happening. Unless they are going to devote a lot of space and time to used games it won't matter at all.

Its sounds like a half assed, poorly planned attempt to break into the used game market. At least from what I read from other sources. I guess if you can't beat'em, join'em or at least attempt to emulate GameStops successful business model.
