But aside from my grind bashing, the game does actually try some cool things. It does appear to actually acknowledge the grinding by setting item prices about as high as it'll take you to grind to a good enough level to continue, letting the player get an impression of what level they should be by the items they can afford. Granted I think having a well-paced RPG is a much more fun decision, I can commend them for at least trying to add some forgiveness to the Asian-style heavy level grinding.

Also, for a game that likes to kill you so much, it has a very forgiving death system. None of this "And they were never heard from again..." business. Die, and you just get put back to town with half as much cash, and you can even 'store' your cash by buying gems at towns which you can sell for exactly as much as you buy. Granted this did bring me to the question of "why even have you lose cash in the first place?" but it's just an Enix thing apparently: That's why almost every Dragon Quest game has banks you can store your dosh in so you don't lose it when you die.

I'm only 3 hours in and am trying to get strong enough to go to the dungeon with the first rune in, but taking it in half to 1-ish hour bursts seems to be better than binging it. It almost feels like a game I'd like more if it were portable, where it's easier to stomach grinding.

Actually it's only the American version that is so grind heavy. The difficulty was intentionally increased for the US release by limiting stat growth of the player character(while not limiting it for rivals) and increasing enemy stats.

In fact you should be a little wary of not grinding too much... Eventually you will have to face your rival, who will definitely be better off than you are. I won my rival fights when I played through 7th Saga by simply outlasting my opponents, but I was using the balanced tank Kamil. Valsu is weaker, but in the low-40s becomes super powerful due to a spell he gets. Make it there, and you'll be just fine. But be wary of talking to other playable characters! You may be able to avoid some unnecessary brutal matches.

Wai u h8 us Japan people ;A;

I beat Kamil the first time we fought, but now he's out for blood and very very prone to outlasting me. I suuuper nearly beat him, but he got some kind of crazy critical hit and got me one turn before I would'a got him :I
Might have to just let him live in that weapon shop for now, mocking me with his existence whenever I forget how much gold I need for mah new sword :/
I hunted the internet and Vaslu + Olvan/Lux seemed to be the safest choice for a first-timer. I ran into Olvan first, so I picked him, but I did find Lux. Not sure who I should stick with, tbh, because Lux did offer to join me.

Had to look up how to get 2 of the reserve tanks, but found all other upgrades.

Wish me luck on the final levels.
I plan to play Secret of Mana, Lufia, or Breath of Fire after I beat MMX2.

Do you have the even more rare MMX3 on SNES? If not... for whatever insane reason the MMX3 version on the collection is the PS1/Saturn/PC version, which has some brief neat cutscenes like X4, but the music is crap in comparison to me.

This one stands out the most...

I mean, crap is probably a stretch, but it makes it an inconsistent experience when you've still got the same sprites as the previous two games. That metallic SNES sound is the blood of these games, and the CD version lacks the punch.
I agree with the point about the music for sure. But overall I just don't care for X3 as much as 1, 2 or 4. The stages just feel off to me, I think maybe they are too wide compared to X's design.
I also never use the ride armors except to get the items you have to have them to get, and probably the biggest problem with the game is the powered up buster has too much delay on it. That makes me get hit more often than I should.

I do like gold armor X with the Z saber, that's OP and I love it.

--Edit--
...and Sigma goes down! (only used 1 reserve tank on the final boss).
I'm glad I played on the SNES as I think it made me appreciate the Cx4 effects a bit more. Love this series.

Yes and no.
I have Rockman X3 and a US shell to play it on my SNES. I figured that was good enough for the original experience, and I could play the collection for the story.
I DO have an SD2SNES as well and threw the rom on an Xbox for the heck of it. So I'm covered one way or another.
Agreed about the music. It would have been really nice of they included both versions in the collection.
...just another lost soul...

I ended up liking X3 more than I used to the last time I played it but that's possibly only because I can blitz through these games after playing so much that I may be losing a proper perspective on them.

My problems with it have always been that they tried to do too much. There's so much stuff to collect like the ride armors which are cool but don't serve much of a purpose in the game other than to let you access areas to find even more stuff. The difficulty curve is also kind of bananas. You're always weak at the start of these games but in this one until you get the armor upgrade you might as well be made of paper.

The Saturn/Collection version does have those cute cutscenes but I agree the CD audio is like elevator music and I tend to only play the original these days, sort of how I hate the remastered edition of TIE Fighter for getting rid of the iMuse dynamic music. Even though some of the compositions aren't great on their own, especially when put next to the other two games.

The ride armor would've been 10x better IMO if they had just let you access it right away, instead of much later on... when you can already find most everything on your own anyway.

Yeah, X3 is a little bloated and has a bit too much backtracking if you want everything. Loved that Vile was back though and the side stages were awesome, and that it was a bit tougher than X2 which I find to be a cakewalk mostly (especially Sigma if walljumping is easy for you). The original is probably my favorite, since it's so simple yet effective, and some of the level design still harkens back to the original NES formula, but it has that awesome darker X layer to it, and all the music is so memorable. I think it has the best Sigma tower too, it actually feels like you really are scaling this insanely monstrous base and the bosses being scattered throughout the levels in a linear fashion was really cool. It also had the least amount of Zero, which is a plus because we don't need a Protoman wannabe. :P

I'll always like the SNES games the most but still love X4-X6 too. I plan to never play X7 and never replay X8.

If I had to rank the X games it'd be X>X4>X2>X6>X3>X5 and I've never played X7 or X8 but I intend to. Since we're on the subject of snes and megaman, how does classic megaman 7 stack up to yall? Personally it's my least favorite classic game.

I love watching this thread but it reminds me how long it has been also since I've fired up a SNES game too. :( Not only that I put up 2 for sale (wolf3d+zatm.) I used to like them but don't care anymore. I'm strongly leaning towards going retroactive and more or less entirely offloading anything I didn't get back in the 90s.

Not a bad list. X4 was the coolest PS1 installment for sure and had the biggest budget with the anime cutscenes. Still had wretched hilarious voice acting, but yeah. Story wasn't great nor bad. But I liked where X5 was taking things... that X6 didn't deliver on and the story got insanely bad there. People rag on X6 for the weird boss leveling system and the hideous level design with surprise spikes and stuff haha, it's true it's obviously a budget title (think there was only 6 months between X5 and X6's release?), but yeah it's still fun. My biggest pet peeve is the awful character transmissions mid level, really messes with the flow of the game. Like we needed tutorials by that point?...

I agree and think Megaman 7 is horrible. Namely because Megaman's sprite is 30ft tall and controls horribly, moves slow, buster shots are slow, etc. I'm not too big on Megaman 8 either since most of the levels have a weird gimmick to them. I think Megaman & Bass blows these two out of the water, though it's one of the hardest games for sure.

I remember back in the day when Megaman & Bass floated around rom sites as "Megaman 9" heh.
