Not to mention my OS is on a rather small SSD where I really have no gig to spare, or don't want it taxed out... which is exactly what the secretly installed Windows 10 folders were doing. Glad this program wiped that stuff too.ExedExes wrote:^^^^^Xeogred wrote:I've been using GWX Control Panel with great success at stopping the auto-Windows 10 nonsense.
GWX Control Panel has been useful for myself and those I service in the field who want to keep their current version. Plus, the guy who made it keeps up with the latest schemes MS tries to force it upon you, such as making it a recommended update.

BTW, this turned out to be a lot smaller deal than people made it out to be. YES, the update's new driver broke the Xbox One controller. But the fix was really, really easy. It took me - oh - 30 seconds?bmoc wrote:So apparently Microsoft broke their own Xbox One controller driver on Windows 10 with a forced driver update.![]()

Maybe now they will admit that forced driver updates are a bad idea? Yeah probably not.
(A) download the old driver.
(B) run it.
(C) click "repair."

Still embarrassing though, and still stupid they even allowed it. Sad thing is, we can't give much credit once you realize how many wouldn't be smart enough to think of that let alone aware of where to find it either even with the ease of google right there.

of course it was embarrassing. There's no denying that. My point was just oh good, there's a very very easy fix which most people don't seem to know about because every article and blog post about this is just about how big a mistake Microsoft's update structure is instead of letting you know there's an easy fix. Doom and gloom sells more clicks I guess.

Just want to add that I recently upgraded my emulation PC to Windows 10. The Xbox One controller functions just great with the latest windows 10 updates - at least it does on my computer.

Yup that's how the gaming media is. Stirring up shit instead of being honest, writing solid reviews, not being bought off, and not trolling to get lots of views and then more from having people being dicks in the comment section which draws in more hits. If they were you know actually nice, useful, and helpful people would care less.noiseredux wrote:of course it was embarrassing. There's no denying that. I read lots of gaming media that is written by nice, helpful and useful people.

I do as well, it tends to be private and not from the likes of IGN and Gamespot and especially Kotaku.

shrug. I have no problem with Kotaku. Sure they write a lot of puff pieces, but I keep them in my usual rotation of gaming sites like PC Gamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, Desctructoid, Polygon, HG101, and Maximum PC.

They've historically trolled Nintendo pretty hard to the point of being between comical and insulting how biased they are and I never appreciated it and they still do it. Though given Nintendo behavior the last few years on console I'd probably not even care now but what's done is done. The site kind of gave an online flashback of old EGM that would patently lie about SNES games to try and push Sega hard back in the earlier 90s and I didn't like it then either.
