Re: PC build thread

hey, so can we talk about gaming monitors?

Currently my main rig is viewed through an Acer H233H 23" monitor. It's nothing fancy. It looks really nice. But y'know, it's just a standard desktop monitor.

I'm curious about getting a bigger monitor in the near-ish future. But if I'm gonna get a new monitor I'm thinking I should take advantage of G-Sync w/ my GTX 970. Yeah?

But I also don't want to spend a small fortune. (Curved screens are out I'm thinking haha).

I also don't really know if 4K is something I need to bother with. Or if I even should - aren't they pretty intense on your hardware?

Anyway, talk to me. What should I be looking for in a legit "gaming monitor"? What size is going to be comfortable, awesome, and not overkill for sitting at a desk?

I use a Haier L32D1120 - 720p, 60hz, 32inch lcd. Its not the best, but it has served me well. But when I have to do work I use a Flanders BM240. I did game through it at one time, but that was silly.

4k is also silly for gaming right now, in five years yes, but right now the hardware needed for it is large and the amount of games that fully support it are small. You are going to be looking at $500ish to take advantage of gsync properly. Something like the BenQ XL2420G or part of the Asus Swift line

I have also beng thinking of getting a 27" 1440 gsync

So something like this:

A few guys I game with have something similar and say it is a game changer.

oh man that's pretty. I'm not sure I want to go north of $500 though. Unless I'm fooling myself thinking I can get something worth upgrading to for less than $500?

I, personally, wouldn't spend the money on a 1440p monitor. I'd either stick to 1080p or go up to 4K.

You could always go for a 24" 1440 or a 27" 1080p, that would be about $400

$400 feels like a good price range.

I think my problem is I'm not completely sure what features I should be wanting here. Maybe you guys can help me sort this out...

Would a 24" (1" more than what I have now) feel like a real upgrade if it was a 1440 monitor?

Would you prefer a 24" 1440 or a 27" 1080?

Does G-Sync even really matter?

There are actually curved 27" monitors in the $300-$400 range... is a curved monitor something I'd even want for gaming?

I have heard underwheling response on the curved monitors. More of a gimmick

Gysnc is worth it apparently.

I would rather go with 24" 1440 than a 27" 1080P

This is stuff I have been told by a few guys I game often with, but not witnessed myself. I am thinking of pulling trigger on one soon though and can let you know.

also I've never really paid attention to latency before. Is 1ms what you really need? Or is stuff like 4ms, 6ms not even noticeable?

Depends on what you play. If you're heavily into twitch action games then you'll want the lowest latency you get. If you're just going to run into oncoming trains anyway then you're fine with worse latency.
