[SOS] Problem with EverDrive N8 NES on AV Famicom

Post by SceptreJLRB »

Hi,

I'm trying to use my Krikzz's EverDrive N8 NES on an AV Famicom via a NES-to-Famicom adaptor. However, most games show graphical glitches and eventually crashes. Slightly moving the cart sometimes helps, but not fully. Here is the adaptor, recently purchased on eBay:

http://www.ebay.es/itm/121907210161?_tr ... EBIDX%3AIT

Used with my NES cart, it works fine, except for an unlicensed-Chinese-pirate-multigame cart, where I get some graphical glitches. The EverDrive itself works perfectly, as shown in my NES. The AV Famicom seems to read properly all my Famicom carts.

I've tried cleaning & re-inserting the adaptor, but haven't succeed. Has anyone experienced such problem? How could it be solved? Is it true that some adaptors doesn't work with EverDrive N8 NES? Does anyone know of an NES-to-Famicom adaptor working on AV Famicom with EverDrive N8 NES?

Thank you very much in advance! Cheers!

This is because of your adapter - I don't think it can be easily fixed - the adapters have problems with extended mappers. Ask your seller if they would exchange the Everdrive for the other model. Since your console can benefit from the Famicom-only enhancements, you should exchange your N8 and get the other model.
Later, you can get a Famicom-to- NES adapter modded to take advantage for a few of the Famicom enhancements in whichever American NES you use it on.

Thanks for your wise advice, Anapan!

Just one more doubt. Regarding the Famicom-only enhancements, I suppose you are referring to expansion audio. But isn't it a feature included in EverDrive N8 NES edition, which one can benefit from via a NES-to-Famicom adaptor in a Famicom, as stated at Krikzz's site description?

My AV Famicom was modded, but I don't think anything was done internally for the sound. The Famicom N8 just works?
I was wrong about the adapter as well - the adapter mod is very simple if you have the correct adapter.
Some relevant information here since I don't actually know (the kudos was unwarranted):

This is a well-discussed topic over at Krikzz's forum, and for specifics you should definitely ask there.
I initially bought a few adapters hoping I'd get the right one as I was planning to get the NES version of the N8 and have full compatibility with all systems (didn't know that wasn't really possible). After reading about the troubles with the adapters, and finding that none arrived with the chip shown in the above topic, I decided to just go with the Famicom one. I *think* for most of the games with extended audio, the Famicom version is the same as the NES, tho the correct adapter for the NES one needs to be modded to fix the missing audio problem. Again, best to ask on Krikzz.

In any case, I recently got myself a FDSStick and FDS adapter. That gave me all access to authentic expansion audio for the FDS. FDS audio is emulated in the N8, but the real FDS adapter - just the small part that plugs into the top of the FDS is very cheap on ebay. IMO the FDSStick is worth it since I've always had volume problems with both flashcarts I had that emulated the FDS audio.

Hi again!

Thanks so much for the info. I'll check Krikzz's forum in detail. All in all, it seems that adaptors only introduce problems and loss of functions... Given that I'm planning to use the EverDrive mainly (if not exclusively) on the AV Famicom, I think I'd better get a Famicom ED-N8 in exchange for my NES one...

Cheers!

Well, I performed a well-documented mod on my adaptor, following the instructions found at:

http://nerdlypleasures.blogspot.com.es/ ... tions.html
(Section 6.)

http://nintendoage.com/forum/messagevie ... did=153660
(Picture at 6th post.)

However, it didn't get rid of the problem. In addition, a background hum sound showed up when using the adapter. Even checking the mod out and re-cutting the linked pins, I cannot fix it. :-(

Well, at least I've tried... Maybe the best solution is getting an ED-N8 Famicom version after all, as initially suggested...
