Awesome things you did in games while ignoring the games

Post by noiseredux »

I got to thinking about this randomly. And I'm not fully sure I'm explaining what I mean correctly; but there have been neat things I've done in games while totally ignoring what it was that the game wanted me to do.

A couple of examples:

The Crew - I don't know if any of you remember this "MMO Racing Game" that Ubisoft released a couple of years ago? It... just kind of came and went with a whimper. Anyway, the point of it was to race around, complete various missions/goals to level up and join up crews. I did none of this, though. I got the game for free when I upgraded my GPU to a GTX 970. As such, I just wanted something fast and pretty to show off the new graphics card. So I never did any actual "playing" of The Crew. Instead, I'd just enjoy driving around aimlessly. The cool thing I remember doing (more than once) was driving from the East Coast (Cape Cod, MA to be exact) to the West Coast (Los Angeles). This took something like 20 mins or a half hour or so, and there were cool day/night cycles as you made your way from a fishing town through cities then farmland and eventually the Pacific Coast.

Grand Theft Auto V - I have actually a somewhat similar story. I spent about half my time in GTA5 doing story missions and half my time screwing around doing whatever seemed fun. But a favorite memory was climbing Mt. Chiliad. Just starting from the bottom - getting out of my car and just walking - was awesome. I never hit the run button. Just slowly walked up that thing - again, probably took nearly a half hour. Day turned to night. And I just kept spinning the camera as I made my way up watching the world below me turn into teeny tiny lights. It was really, really cool.

Who's got similar stories/memories?

Reaching way back....

Brett Hull Hockey '95 - SNES

My sister and I loved this game. Not that we are hockey fans - we're Southerners for christ's sake! But the sound effects when a body check happened sounded like a clap of thunder. We thought it was hilarious! Al Michaels's did some stilted play-by-play for the game too. Then we found out that the game kept track of team statistics, particularly the number of body checks that each team had delivered.

Soon we weren't playing hockey any more. Our rule was that goals didn't matter - the team with the most body checks at the end of the game was the winner!

I have a lot of great memories of playing that game with my little sister when we were kids. One of the best sports games ever to a non-sports game guy like me.

Maybe this just amounts to finding easter eggs, but in Borderlands 2 I was just kind of seeing how far I could climb up a mountain that I knew the game wouldn't let me get to the top of. That thing where you're just kind of climbing/grinding up against the scenery trying to get as high as you can. Ended up finding some weird colored blocks and pick axing my way into a secret cave with Minecraft creepers inside! Killed them from a far and found some amazing loot as well, probably the best I'd found in the game to that point. I also rarely stumble upon those kinds of things in games.

Sometimes when I play racing games I drive backwards so I can try to make a huge pileup.

I remember back in my younger days when Goldeneye 007 was all the rage on the n64. My friends and I played that thing to death. I'm talking every single day, for hours, for probably close to a year. Before school, during lunch, after school, after dinner, until bed time lol. Local co-op at it's finest! When you do that, the game play tends to get recycled every now and again, so instead of trying to kill each other, we would play hide and seek. One player would close their eyes or go to another room in the house, while the 2nd player would hide somewhere in the game. Once you found your hiding spot, you would turn and face the wall and zoom all the way into the wall texture so that your hiding place wouldn't be obvious. It was great fun!. We also eventually did the same thing with "hide the remote mines" haha.

Also in Counter Strike 1.6, there's something called "bunny hopping" Kind of a glitch that requires a lot of skill to master. If you time your jumps and angle them from side to side using a very precise mouse pattern, you can actually increase your speed faster than the game allows you to, as well as increase your jump distance. If you can master the skill, it's really insane how far you can jump and how fast you can move. Putting in thousands of hours into that game, you tend to get bored of the rinse and repeat shooting rounds the game is designed for. So I spent some time mastering the bunny hop, then would make my own game of going into servers and not buying any weapons, just bunny hopping around the map with super speed while everyone else would try to chase me/kill me. It was hilarious watching them unable to keep up with me, just zooming by them like it was nothing. Some people found it funny, some people found it rather annoying. I found it funny :P

Last Summer a few buddies and myself became obsessed with Shenmue darts, of all things. I'd come home reeking of cigarettes after a good 4 hours of trading off turns and chain-smoking to that super repetitive/awesome music.

Crackdown - Xbox 360

The main form of travelling through the game world is by jumping, Incredible Hulk-style all over the place. Hidden around the environment are lots of little green orbs for you to collect. Each orb increases your jump height a little bit.

I became obsessed with collecting all of the orbs because leaping all over the place and up and down buildings was so much fun. I never actually did all the missions or finished the game but I collected every single orb in the game!

I always try to explore games and get out of the maps. Borderlands 1 rewarded players for this by putting chests in really random places.

One of the best I ever found was in Halo 2 coop, you can climb several of the towers (near the slow moving bridge event about halfway through the game) if you have enough grenades and can time your crouch jumps off of your coop buddies head while he is crouch jumping. The towers are ladder shaped so once you get your method down you can actually climb it past the "bird" things up in the sky.

Xenogears

The mini-game that was actually a full fledged 3D 2-player fighting game. I played that with a friend on more than one occasion back in the day. It was a pretty decent fighter for its time.
