Super R-Type is one of the few SNES shmups I've actually beaten...

I am a little surprised you didn't mention the price of R-Type III. That has always been a huge barrier to entry for me.

Ack, I see you're playing Drakkhen... thoughts so far? I hope to look at that game and Dragon View sometime soon.

Oh boy. It is kind of a mess. The SNES port of Drakkhen has been changed significantly to make it much easier than the original Amiga and Atari ST releases, but it's still incredibly frustrating and grind heavy. There are a lot of...quirks to it, and I admit that I wouldn't recommend it to any but the most seasoned of RPG fans. I'm playing it for a personal quest, but I think most people could safely avoid this one. Frankly I think most people aren't hardcore enough for it. It's like The 7th Saga in that regard.

As I play any RPG, I post pretty heavily about my experiences and realizations with the game. I hope that there is some information there which will help shed some light on the game. Here are my write ups on Drakkhen:

Party Breakdown
The Game Gets Going
Problems
Your Daily Grind

Here's also a side post I made about some of the differences between the computer releases and the SNES port:

This is not a complete list of changes, as some didn't become apparent until I was a bit into the game while reading about the CRPG Addict's experience with the DOS version.

As for Dragon View, I haven't given it a whirl yet, but I hear it's very different...in a good way.

Ohh, I should've just checked that thread, I checked "Games Completed" for some reason, I guess I'm used to reading your thoughts there. Thanks for posting all that! Good god, I'd forgotten about the random boss fights out of nowhere. I can't imagine renting a game like that way back when.

Haha, no worries. I'll post my full thoughts on it once I actually beat it, but I like sharing the experiences which lead me to shape and develop my final opinion. Sometimes I come up with some interesting insights in how to abuse a game based on my observations, such as my breakdown of the 7th Saga combat system. Other times I end up giving a sort of play by play about my decisions, such as when I played Ultima Underworld. It makes for some fun recollection and reflection on game design and mechanics.

Ultimately I just like talking about the games I'm playing and have just beaten, haha. I think you'll have an interesting time with Drakkhen and will find some things to appreciate, though there is a lot to criticize as well.

I certainly appreciate it, it's a fantastic amount of detail and it makes me want to play the game. Even though it sounds like it friggin sucks. Like, worse than Brandish and Secret of the Stars.

I haven't spent enough time with Brandish to form an opinion, but Secret of the Stars...

Put it this way. I set Secret of the Stars down for over a year before going back to it. The only reason I went back to it at all was likely because I had just done the same with Breath of Fire 2 and managed to get through that one, so I figured I would try to finish up SotS too. I find some interesting parallels between them(BoF2 and SotS), but SotS is a hot mess for a lot of reasons. I haven't set Drakkhen down yet, but since I have a time requirement for this one(in April I am playing something for Together RPG), we'll see what happens if I haven't beaten it by the time we get there.
