I've noticed some Famicom games were released in plastic boxes, specifically Gimmick! and Nobunaga's Ambition.
Any input on how common this was and why it happened?

Nintendo handled third-party publishers differently in Japan. Unlike in the west, they could do their own manufacturing. This lead to Famicom cartridges and boxes to come in a large array of shapes, sizes and colors (this also makes the system quite interesting to collect for, from a visual standpoint). So I guess some publishers opted for the plastic boxes because of their longevity, or maybe they already had the manufacturing process ready or easy to adapt to from another product, so it was cheaper to them.
The majority of Famicom games do come in cardboard boxes. Namcot used plastic boxes for all their games (or very nearly so, anyway), but I think they were the only publisher to do so. Personally, I would've loved if every Famicom game had come in a plastic box. Would mean more surviving complete copies to this day. But alas.
