Drakkhen

I've started to come to terms with the game's problems, and now I'm finding myself actually enjoying this experience. As I had previously thought, the issue with Drakkhen is that it starts with such a front-loaded difficulty curve. Gain a few levels, and suddenly the major hindrances of the previous day are mere anomalies in your way. Advance the story just enough to get access to better gear, and suddenly you're a tank that enemies struggle to connect against. A single level can mean the complete difference between ultimate victory and utter annihilation, and while grinding you are likely to uncover items which give intense advantages.

Last night I managed to grind up a bit; the sorcerer Xen got in a couple of lucky hits which caused his level to jump to 3, and with new access to the fire ball spell, he became a turret, unloading as fast as his MP regeneration would allow on any enemy that approached. Ack and Fast both worked hard, but Noise struggled...until I managed to buy a bow and arrow. Suddenly Noise became the turret I needed him to be, and I immediately went back to do the same for both of my more melee-centric characters. Folks, bows and arrows are overpowered in Drakkhen, even though they do relatively little damage compared to some of the swords I have access to. The bow lets you hit at range to do damage and nab experience points(including aerial foes), it prevents enemies from often reaching your characters meaning you don't have to worry about lifeloss or equipment breaking, and it can be used in conjunction with a shield so you're still fully armored. A few previously inaccessible enemies are now easy pickings, and I managed to slaughter two things in fireplaces I wouldn't have been able to hit otherwise.

As a result of getting both kills on those fireplace critters, Ack shot up to level 7, while Fast, Xen, and Noise are all level 4. Each class apparently has a different experience requirement to level, but those fireplace things were worth a LOT of experience, so Ack is about 3 times ahead the other characters. I thought it was an error when it first happened. In the meantime, I continue to seek out more gear to better equip my team. I'm now in the distant north, a polar region full of ice spikes and frozen caves, and I'm about to plunge into a new dungeon to see what I can find. I also took down my first of the constellation creatures, meaning one of the earliest super monsters I faced is now a beatable foe. Thanks to rings and staves I've acquired, my characters are all receiving some entertaining bonuses, like half damage from enemy spells or invisibility to keep the enemy from targeting them. In terms of plot I have a ways to go, but I've read that the game only requires your party to be level 15 or so to win, so I think I'm doing pretty well for now.

Also, Drakkhen's SNES OST is pretty soothing:

Night in the Forest
Day in the Ice
Night in the Ice
Tavern
Game Over

I found an Easter egg in PSO. I actually mean one of these, not one of these.

Unlocking the main story quests is awkward. In involves completing prior main story quests in single player mode and completing government quests in normal (multiplayer) mode. Thanks PSO message boards for cleaning that up.

In the caves now. Level 24. I feel pretty overpowered but I'm sure that the caves boss will still prove to be a giant pain in the assicle.

I experimented a little bit but ultimately stuck with Ultima.

More Dragon Warrior today.

I picked up at level 11. I tried to head to the southwest corner of the map (the last place I hadn't been) but got annihilated, so the first task of today was grinding - I grinded to level 13 and picked up the Magic Armour to boot.

Anyway, I managed to push to the far south by running away over and over, and made it to Cantlin, where I learned the location of Erdrick's Armour and Erdrick's Token.

I fought an Axe Knight and got the armour after about 15 tedious attempts. I'm sure I was underlevelled, but there's nothing good to grind on right now, so I really wanted the armour to help me fight the next lot of enemies. I eventually got it after a lucky critical hit.

After that, I got the token, swapped it for a rainbow drop and opened the bridge to the final bosses castle. Everything in there was too tough for me, but I've been told it's worth pushig through and finding Erdrick's Sword in the castle sooner rather than later. This took me about 8 attempts - I kept getting unlucky and failing to flee, especially against Axe Knights and Werewolfs.

Anyway, I got the Sword eventually. Now all that's left is the long grind to level 18 or so ready to take on the final boss. After an hour of tedious grinding, I'm at level 14 now. I have 10000 gold. I'm aiming for 14800 for the best shield and then I have all the best equipment in the game and it's a case of fighting the strongest things I can handle until I can get enough exp to finally finish this thing.

Dragon Warrior has a slow ass start, an action packed middle and a RIDICULOUSLY grindy third act.

Final protip; when you're ready for the final confrontation fill your bag with herbs and run from EVERYTHING. You'll want all your strength for the final boss and even at high levels everything in there takes too much to kill.

I've got to give alienjesus props if he's doing the NES version. It's definitely the most challenging variant of DQ to play.

Most definitely. They really hadn't figured out good balance back then and it shows in how grindy things get.
