Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Holy mother of bandits at six o' clock Ace Combat Joint Assault is an annoying assed game.
Let's throw out fierce dog fights for contrived artificial mission structures like dodging rail guns or staying below 6500' at all times else suffer instant death ray attacks.
Let's make missiles only lock on if you're so close that you're literally breathing the exhaust fumes of the target.
Let's make sure none of the planes have LRMs or GGBs. Just, none, of, them.
Let's lock the best planes and upgrades behind New Game+ so while playing the primary campaign first, you're stuck with shit tier planes. You want F-22A Raptor? Ha ha here F-5E Tiger II eat it.
Let's force the player to clear out ass loads of arbitrary targets before being able to face the actual central threat of the mission. That way when the player is shot down (arbitrarily) they have to grind through all those targets again. And again. Again.
Let's do all this to artificially prolong the otherwise brief campaign.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I've said it many times before, but the Xak series is amazing. Anyone who likes Ys needs to check these games out.
My tastes in JRPGs have changed a bit over these last few years, and I now prefer action-RPGs over turn-based. Just give me a <10 hour 8/16-bit game that plays like Zelda or Ys and I'm a happy man.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Which Xak games explicitly are you referring to? I mean, just the MSX ones?

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I've only played the MSX ones via emulation. Some people swear those are the best though (and there are unofficial English language versions available).Exhuminator wrote:Which Xak games explicitly are you referring to? I mean, just the MSX ones?
I have all the Xak console ports with the exception of Fray on Game Gear. So that's Xak I (Super Famicom), Fray in Magical Adventure (PC Engine CD), Xak I & II (PC Engine CD), and Xak III (PC Engine CD).
There's another game called Tower of Gazzel that unfortunately never received a console port.
I was derping around with part one last night and was reminded of how much I love the series.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
So "Xak: The Art of Visual Stage" on SFC is just a port of Xak 1 then?

Yup. And the "bump system" has been changed to a more traditional combat system. You know, where you actually have to push a button.

Actually this game fares better with the bump system. In Super Famicom Xak the enemies take too long to kill, and don't get knocked back when hit so you have to continuously waltz around them.Xeogred wrote:So it's actually good then?BoneSnapDeez wrote:Yup. I'll take a good bump system over an awkward button press system any day.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
But if it's zelda I don't think that's that bad....
