I get that, I guess I can just pull myself away from the feelings on the game. I've finished it just once, had to make myself after months of a gap to drop the last dungeon then Ganon/finish in a day back in the 90s, and I've tinkered since, did some of the 3DS one too which I have. I just found it rough, not as enjoyable as some other 2/3D titles for I think valid reasons.

Oh and I like Mega Man, but I dislike Mega Man X and the other spinoffs mostly, they just not good for one reason or another.

See and with megaman I don't know. The only games I've truly "beat" so far are a slew of the battle network games. I love those and they're right near the top of my list to find again(I've got that weird ds version of Double Team but I still need the others especially since I want to beat 1. I remember it being quite a deal rougher than blue moon. I almost want to attempt my anniversary collection again but I'm not sure....(heck I'm still waiting on my 3ds version...I need to check the tracking had a card screwup since I forgot to switch it....)
My gameroom
My systems: NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, original gba, gba sp(001), ds lite, 3ds, vita, psp, PSone(101 model) ps2, ps3(320gb model), ps4, retron 5, and Dreamcast.

Or it's based on media reaction from when they were new, when flaws got overlooked in favor of all the stuff that the game was doing right.

I'd say quite a lot of it really comes down to the subjective experience. Square pumped a -ton- of money into marketing VII at the time, which got a lot of people trying it, and it made a huge impression. Others of us probably remember some other game as being a lot better than it objectively is.

I can understand the difficult in the shifting prerendered backgrounds and all that. Personally, I tend to have more issue with earlier 3D games due to low resolutions and repetitive textures making them hard for me to navigate. Doubly so when on a SDTV or something.

Since it got brought up, megaman is my favorite series of games, especially the X games. I don't see what you don't like about it. Of course im a fan boy for the series so I can't look at it objectively.

But Megaman X is the greatest game of all time!

I liked Mega Man far more than Mario growing up. It's the series I would try to get people into, especially my friends that would only play Mario games.

I was the same way. Megaman 2 and 3 were my go to NES games, above options like Mario Bros 3 and Legend of Zelda.
I still enjoyed those games but they were never my first pick.

Reasons why Mega Man is better than Mario:

1. You get a gun.
2. You actually have to fight the bosses.
3. Levels don't consist of you going only right, but also sometimes up, down, and left.
4. You're not a racist stereotype.
5. Robots are cool.
6. You get a dog.
7. Instead of a fat turtle, you fight evil Einstein.
8. Choosable levels.
9. You get more powerful through cannibalism.
10. No butt stuff.
