This whole thing is so bizarre. I wonder if the Retro VGS people just got in over their heads, or if they were really trying to scam people.

I think it's the former. But when there's pressure to show something, even decent people make really bad decisions. I can't see anyone buying into this now, and I don't feel sorry for them...

...well, maybe a little. I'm sure they aren't the first to demo a bunch of BS at a trade show, though. They just had the misfortune of not getting away with it. It would have been better to just fess up, because this is going to affect their reputations for the rest of their lives, unless they really can deliver a product. I just don't think it'll be this one.

I agree. I don't think there was malice involved. I think they got in over their heads and felt pressure to show something they hadn't achieved yet.

I disagree. While I don't think they were trying to scam consumers, they were trying to scam the "system".

The way I see it, they wanted to get funding via kickstarter, which requires that for physical hardware, you have a working prototype. They lied through their teeth to show they had a "working prototype" in order to get funding via kickstarter, they got found out and bailed on it.

They were all set to go to kickstarter, they had a date planned for it with a "protoype" that would be ready. If this was the stage they were at (Using the SNES Jr), there was no way in hell they were going to get a working prototype in place by then.

Also they lied initially when found out, claiming it was easier to use the video out of the SNES for their system, not only a lie, but utterly stupid.

It was purely to get money out of peoples pockets to fund their project in a dishonest manner (as their "prototype" was utter bullshit).

True, but then again, that's how folks at trade shows will also try to get money out of investors. I agree that it's absolutely not cool what they did, but I still suspect they were in over their heads, over-promised, and when they couldn't make could on it, they resorted to less-than-honorable means to try to salvage the situation. What started out as well-intentioned turned into something anything but.

The really funny part is that there have been folks that have gamed the system and actually delivered. Go figure.

And yeah, looks like it's toast.
