To be fair, the really dumb stuff from FFT didn't happen until FFTA. FFT just had hilariously broken units and classes.

I'd love to do one for consoles with all of the backlog I have on that, but for school reasons my console gaming time is going to be occupied for at least a little while with FFXIII and Metroid Other M. Thus, only handhelds for me.

Rocket Slime 3 (3DS)
Codename S.T.E.A.M. (3DS)
Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor (DS)
Flower, Sun, and Rain (DS)
Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God (Vita)
Ys: Memories of Celceta (Vita)
Tales of Hearts R (Vita)
Riviera (GBA)
Yggdra Union (GBA)

I haven't played any of those myself, but I own a few of them. Personally I would play UnEpic first, because it's the most unusual and idiosyncratic of the bunch.

Wow, I own a lot of those as well, but haven't beaten any of them either. Geez, so many RPGs, so little time.

I think you should go with Celceta first because Ys. After that, Sorcery Saga. And Devil Survivor goes third place, but get the 3DS version if you can.

 Okay I'm sold guys. Soon as I'm done with Crimson Shroud, I'm on this.

I heard Knights of Lodis wasn't as good? I mean this is the first I've heard of people praising it. IIRC Matsuno wasn't even involved with it.

Also I've been hesitant about FFT on GBA and DS because so many people say the judge/rules systems ruin the games. Am I to understand that's horseshit and the FFTA games are actually solid?

Somehow I missed Drakkhen ... run, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!!! It's beyond bad.

@Exhuminator: I really hated the judge system and it pretty much ruined it for me. I guess if you don't mind the idea of not being allowed to use X (Fire for example) for a battle, then you might be cool with it. But forced limitations in RPG's annoy me. It was a strange system.

Knight of Lodis is definitely legit. It's not as complex story wise, but still better than your run of the mill Tales or Fire Emblem kind of story.

I actually liked the forced limitations. Found it an interesting mechanic.

I also liked TO on GBA as well.

You're gonna see some...interesting choices on this list. While they're all unbeaten and in my backlog, I'm trying to stick to some of the shorter options I have at my disposal, which means that quality is...well, it isn't exactly at the forefront. Still, these have all got to get beaten sometime, right? Anyway, here's my list:

1. Super Ninja Boy (SNES)
2. Unepic (PC)
3. Lichdom: Battlemage (PC)
4. Drakkhen (SNES)
5. Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone (PC)

So...which of these should I play?
If you play Unepic, I will give it a shot too.

Well, thats a tricky one. I'd say that yes, on average it is horseshit and the games are better than solid. They're much better balanced for actual party building than the PS1 game.

On the other hand, knowing how your tastes in games and mine tend to clash, I have this strong intuition that you will hate it.

Go as old as possible. Go with Riviera.

And play Yggdra Union after as it's a "sequel."

I thought maybe the judge system was put into place to force the player to use a variety of strategies throughout the game, instead of relying on the same winning stratagems for each battle over and over. I mean if that's the case, I'm cool with it.
