About three years ago, my wife and I attempted to co-op Secret of Mana together. Now, the last time I beat SoM was in 1997, and I remember loving it. However, upon replaying it, and getting about a third of the way through, neither I nor my wife were enjoying the game much. While I still love the graphics and adore the music, the actual game design and pacing simply hasn't aged well. So we put it away and moved on to co-op'ing other things.
I'm not saying SoM is a bad game. It just didn't live up to my halcyon memories.
I had almost the exact same experience. First played it around the same time you did, thought it was a blast. A few years ago I played through it 3-player with a buddy and my girlfriend. Like you, I didn't think it had aged well at all.
Even worse, the guy we were playing with is like a hardcore completionist, so the game totally dragged on ("we gotta level-up/max out
every weapon before we beat it!"). Ugh. No, sorry, spending hours frivolously grinding on this game that I wanted to be over with hours ago isn't how I want to spend my free time.
We threw him a bone and stuck through it til the bitter end, but wow, that was not a very pleasant experience.
