I am coming to the realization that From Software's best work takes all of the elements we loved - but did not realize we loved - about classic games and seamlessly incorporates them with modern game design. (BTW, King's Field IV is also the best "metroidvania" game on the PS2.)Xeogred wrote:Well that's not hard to believe. King's Field IV (i.e., King's Field: The Ancient City) is more true to the formula set out in the original Legend of Zelda than any other modern game (including 3D Dot Game Heroes!).

I'm looking forward to diving into the first King's Field when I have a chance.
(Also, I didn't realize that Japanese PSX games didn't come in traditional jewel cases. At least this one didn't.)

I'm interested in seeing if after you beat KF4, you go back and start the series over from KF1 and play all the way through like I did.prfsnl_gmr wrote:BTW, King's Field IV is also the best "metroidvania" game on the PS2.)
The crazy thing is, you'd think going from KF4 to KF1 would be a horrible retrograde experience. But honestly, KF1 was almost as much fun for me. Yeah the atmosphere wasn't nearly as good 'cause simple graphics, but the soul was there in full force.

Unpopular gaming opinion? I don't care about No Man's Sky. It doesn't intrigue me one iota.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

I see what you did there...Exhuminator wrote:but the soul was there in full force
One From Software game is enough for me for now. I may try the other KF games someday, but I suspect that I will move on to Dark Souls and Dark Souls II next.
EDIT: By "next", I mean after I play a bunch of other games in other genres first. I am really itching for shmup right now, and I may blast through RayForce as soon as I am done murdering everything in the Ancient City (except for one skeleton on level 2 that I named Fred...I always say hello whenever I pass by him, and I let him "live" so that he can have the place to himself after I am gone...

I... don't even know what it is. I haven't even bothered to click the link on GOG.Exhuminator wrote:Unpopular gaming opinion? I don't care about No Man's Sky. It doesn't intrigue me one iota.

I found this pretty on-the-nose. Twilight Princess in particular has a lot of these issues:Tanooki wrote:The game industry never learns one big thing, sometimes LESS is more, though that's the pea brained gamers driving that too bitching about features. When you eventually play out something enough all you can ever do is add in fetch quests, dragged out sequences, overkill backtracking, lame secondary items for perfectionists, long open boring eras to traverse, bloating the upgrade system, or other crap of the sort it makes a game wear its welcome out long before it's done and eventually then the gamer is done too with the franchise.
Fetch Quests - Nintendo wasn't above making the Triforce Pieces mistake again.
Bloated Upgrade System - I truly wish there were reasons to learn those Hidden Skills. It would have been a great idea in a game with more depth in its combat and enemy variety/intensity. Zelda's not really that kind of game. Maybe a Zelda game designed like Ninja Gaiden Black?
Lame Secondary Items - TP does severely underuse its Dungeon Items. Even the Megaton Hammer had some fun uses in Ocarina of Time. For the perfectionists bit, I have to throw in that awful Rupee-Eating Armor in TP.
Long, Boring Areas - TP's Hyrule Field qualifies, but people comment that Ocarina of Time's field was just as boring as Wind Waker's water traversal. It kind of all ends up being a wash.
I'm not trying to be cruel, but Twilight Princess does have some of Wind Waker's design deficiencies. For me, its these bad and sideways decisions that have made the Zelda Block shine that much brighter.

I don't know if this is an unpopular gaming opinion here or not, but I feel like it might be based on what I've seen on other sites - I think releasing their next console before the fall of 2017 would be a huge mistake for Nintendo.

The triforce hunt in WW always felt like an attempt to make up for a game that pretty clearly seemed cut short.LensOfTruth wrote:I found this pretty on-the-nose. TP on the other hand seemed like it was in development forever, and that game is kinda a huge mess. Even bloat aside, it's kinda incoherent, unsatisfying, has a plot with little to no sense of urgency to it (nobody seems particularly bothered to be a spirit or whatever) and frankly the game can't seem to make up its mind if it wants to be a 'weird' zelda (wolf link, midna, twilight realm stuff, etc) or if it just wants to be OOT 2.0.
It's got some cool moments and nice setpieces but it's really poorly strung together (and has the most dull opening of any game in the series). TP's honestly the worst Zelda for me.
....'course, I like Skyward Sword quite a bit, so what do I know?
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Why? I can see maybe fostering some ill will due to a relatively short shelf life for the Wii U and perhaps New 3DS, but otherwise there doesn't seem to be a lot of reason not to get the NX out otherwise. If the more recent rumors are accurate, it'd probably be a big change in third party interest in their platform.ElkinFencer10 wrote:I don't know if this is an unpopular gaming opinion here or not, but I feel like it might be based on what I've seen on other sites - I think releasing their next console before the fall of 2017 would be a huge mistake for Nintendo.
Yesterday's Nintendo Direct didn't seem to indicate much in the way of long-term plans for the Wii U either.
