Acclimation Times

Post by Glitch42 »

How long does it take you to acclimate to a new game? Be it a first person shooter or a platformer. It probably takes me longer than it should, I can't count how many times I've been shot in a shooter because I couldn't figure out/remember the controls or the sensitivity of the analogue sticks (despite always reading the manual first).
So, what about you?

Basically 5-10 minutes. Maybe a little more if they do something interesting with the controls like Brothers.

Unless it's a deeply complex SRPG or JRPG with labyrinthine subsystems, I usually have a new game sussed in under 5 minutes.

Some MMOs can take days before you really feel part of the world.

It depends on the game. Typically it's pretty quick, but sometimes I'll find a game that has controls slightly off from what I'm used to, and that becomes maddening. Case in point, Ultima Underworld uses W to move forward, A and D to turn left or right, and S to walk forward. X moves you back. I played five minutes and repeatedly went for S instead of X just because I'm so used to WASD.

I take a very long time to accomodate to new controllers or control schemes, specially in platformers and fighters and specially if the controls are analog. I constantly attack in the wrong direction, miss very simply jumps...I even do that in Final Fight and I've been playing it for like 60-70 hours.

I get used to shooters and other PC-centric games quite quickly, though finding the right sensitivity is a pain.

It depends on the game. Most of the time, 5-10 minutes is more than enough. If the game is a bit more technical, though (something like Devil May Cry), it takes me a bit more time to really get acclimated with the move set and be proficient.

Controllers usually don't bother me, once I've used one for a bit. I do admit that the Wii U Pro Controller takes me a short amount of time to adjust, mostly because my hand tends to go towards X/A instead of Y/B sometimes. It's where the buttons are located on the controller that throws me off.

I played through the entire Sonic CD without knowing about The Super Peel Out. You'd think that just be accident I would've done it once or twice.

Knowing of its existence would've made Stardust Speedway roughly a million times easier...

I'm 17 hours into King's Field IV, and I still haven't entirely adjusted to the wonky controls (or cryptic, over-complicated "elemental" system). Thankfully, the game is pretty easy, and you clearly don't need to understand all of the mechanics completely in order to beat it.
