Random Gaming Thoughts
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
IMO, just buy Windows. It doesn't make sense to spend $800+ on a pile of hardware and then refuse to pay $80 for the piece of software that makes it do what you want it to do. Not like games are free either.
Linux is better supported for gaming than ever, with a decent amount of stuff on Steam simply having a Linux port already. However, it's still a fraction of what's native to Windows, and while you can use WINE for a lot of that, it's not a seamless sure thing.

Yeah, just buy Windows. It's a drop in the bucket when you're already building a PC, and no OS is going to top Windows's compatibility for gaming.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Another vote for Windows. I get what Valve was trying to do but SteamOS is unnecessarily limiting. I've got a little Steambox machine running Windows 10 so not only is it a great, semi-portable gaming machine but it's an excellent desktop PC as well.
Even if you're not wanting to use it as a PC you've still got a lot more options for games outside of Steam's environment and the Steam client already has its big picture mode for playing on a TV.

I pm'd him with some ideas, and also urged him to go with Windows. I've got some extra keys so...Gunstar Green wrote:Another vote for Windows. Building a nice computer and then only running Linux on it, is like building a hot rod and only driving it down a bumpy dirt road.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
That's probably not a fair comparison since Linux can be awesome. It's just that only a small percentage of games have Linux ports. It's more like building a hot rod but only driving on it a small percentage of roads.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Silly analogies aside, if you want to play Windows games just build a Windows PC.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
Message received! There's a reason my first question was if WINE had matured enough to where it was reasonable to build a Linux gaming rig
Windows it shall be, especially with noise able to hook me up cheap (and the fact that even full-price, Win10 is far cheaper than 7/2k/XP was... at least in my memory)
I've been pointed at a pretty nice rig I can assemble from newegg right now (with reusing a few components of my old one that are still very serviceable)... and will likely be pulling the trigger this weekend, if not on the exact pieces I was pointed at, something very close. I just haven't been in the game in close to a decade now, so I didn't even know what was a reasonable tradeoff of performance and cash. Thanks, Brad!

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
glad to help, bud. Honestly I just really enjoy planning builds, researching parts, trying to balance budget vs. performance... it's like I get to go shopping without spending my own money.
