I agree these are good games (haven't played Kirby 64, and I don't care for Paper Mario) but I'd argue they have since better sequels or remakes that makes these obsolete.

yep! Which is why I just don't care for the console anymore. I like those games and they've been redone in a better form elsewhere

Ocarina of Time is the only one that's been remade, and sequels are supposed to be better. They're often not, but a sequel is supposed to take what made the original good and make it better, and Nintendo usually does a very good job of that. That a remake or sequel is better is definitely not a mark against an original.

It depends for sequels. If Ocarina didnt have a remake, it is a definitively unique game in its own right. But for games likes Mario Kart and Smash, there really isn't much incentive to play these anymore with the newer releases.

I would say you're wrong about Mario Kart actually. I still feel the N64 release is the pinnacle of the series, though it's an excellent series over all. But you're right on about Smash.

There's a lot I like about the original Smash, though. I like that the pace is a little less frenetic. I know folks loved the spaz-fest that was Melee, but it took me quite a while to adjust to the speed of that game.

Also, Melee nerfed the heck out of Kirby. Boo.

The original is my favorite of the series.

I think, at the time, it was the place for kart racers, it played host to two excellent Zelda games, had Mario 64 and its Rare imitations, and Goldeneye / Perfect Dark. Oh, and Paper Mario! Those made it worthwhile, in my mind.

Plus, delve down just a bit more, and there's a good Ogre Battle game, weird stuff like Hybrid Heaven, Blast Corps, so yeah, I think my number on that is probably a bit higher than yours... but it's still not very large. Probably 20-ish.
I will say that I LOVED Perfect Dark when it came out, and still have fond memories of it. Not sure if the control scheme/graphics hold up today though. That is one of my beefs with the N64 is it feels like the graphics just don't hold up today while I could happily play a 16 bit console or the original Playstation. Dunno, probably that muddy look of some N64 games.

Also loved/have fond memories of Pokemon Snap, so I suppose there are a few games I could revisit. 8)
