video conferencing

Post by RCBH928 »

Did you know that you can do video conferencing with out the use of the internet or mobile phone?
seems so, I was watching the making of a movie called dragon hart and I think ET, and both directors in the special features mentioned that they made video conferencing with the film crew being on another continent using satellite.
WOAH! I thought this kind of stuff is only found in the 21 century(when that expression meant people will be living on the moon).

I know today you can, using internet and something as simple as MSN or 3g cell phone, but if any one knows how they did it back in 80's and mid-90's I am very interested to know

I'd guess it was satellite phone. It's been around for a while, but it isn't worth the money for 99% of people.

Yup this is old technology that was very expensive and took skilled people to install. My dad used to work at a car dealership. Ford bought into this equipment so they could do staff training virtually in the late 80's - mid 90's.

Growing up it was one of the things that influenced my geeky side. I thought all that stuff was a special treat to be able to play with.
