There's simply no convenient (legal) way to play these games nowadays. The original copies are positively ancient (many on 5.25" disks) and the compilations are long out-of-print and expensive. That leaves "abandonware" (which is how I originally played the games some years ago) but I'd prefer to support the developer if possible.

Speaking of WRPGs I may have to cave soon and beef up this PC, which in its present state is unable to run Fallout 4, The Witcher 3, and Might and Magic X.
I have one of the compilation CDs. I had no idea it was valuable.

I've heard that there was some legal issues with the first five games; either Andrew or Trevor still had partial rights to those games even though EA owns the general Wizardry IP from when they bought Sir-Tech (minus the licensing deal that Japan has in perpetuity).

Sir-Tech has been out of business for thirteen years, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

This one?

Note that my definition of "valuable" may differ from others...

A shame that the rights to some of these older games get tied up in legal crap.

I'm sure GOG has been trying to wrangle this from day 1. But hey, in the meantime, all of Ultima, all of Might and Magic, all of the Bard's Tale games...I'd say we are still doing pretty well.

Let's say you're collecting for a certain console and you have whatever, $100 to spend. Do you prefer (find it more fun or rewarding) to:

A) Buy like twenty $5 games?
B) Buy a couple of pricier $50 games?
C) Buy one of the big-hitter $100 games?

*Hint: There's no wrong answer, but I am interested in the various schools of thought on this.
Depends on my mood. Currently I'm enjoying watching the #'s go up on my NES collection, so I'd probably go with A. However, there's also something to be said for C -- especially if you find a heavy hitter game at a decent deal. B is my least-likely option but it'll still happen sometimes.
Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!
Cheat sheet of my collection, always looking to increase it. 405/677 licensed games, 46/"95" unlicensed
Chronically out of date BST thread

I do mostly A with a bit of B, especially recently where I'm trying to focus on some of the bigger purchases.

I've never spent more than £45 on a game, which I guess means I've never really done C

When I first start collecting for a console, I do option A. When I've got at least 10 games for that console, I go for option B. Once I hit 15 or 20 games for a console, I occassionally go for option C. My default, however, is option B.

I create a list of games I want for the platform. I weight the games by most desired. I start with most desired first, again weighted by average cost. Then I start to buy games in that order.
