I haven't dug largely into this yet as I think she's being nuts, not realizing something MS did forced a restart, or some crap creeped in from the web.
For some reason my laptop from around 5 years ago I was using up until a little over a year ago likes to sometimes just supposedly shut off while in use. I never once had a problem with that ASUS K53E laptop when I had it other than a stupid windows based glitch that would jack up the computer if it went into sleep mode (so I 100% removed its ability to do so.)
I've on occasion got fed up with the complaining and looked at it. I've not seen anything obviously installed on there at least the last time I checked. I see no weird processes that stand out, no weird programs I don't recognize installed either. I've run a tool or two that checks various things or ccleaner type stuff to get the funk out, nothing with red flags there or on the virus checker too.
I know this is fairly vague but I'm tiring of the whining, any ideas maybe I could poke a stick at short of just resetting the thing back to factory?

That's what it sounds like. The old desktop I built in 8th grade started doing this towards the end of its life.Ack wrote:Are you sure it didn't overheat?

Could be overheating like others have said but here are some things that you can try in case it is software based.
1. At a command prompt, run sfc /SCANNOW
2. Try Tweaking.com's Windows Repair Tool.
Those two things usually cause Windows to start behaving again if it is acting squirrely. I'd also consider downloading something that will let you see what temperature the laptop is running at. I usually go with Speccy.

Overheating is possible here, seeing 56-60C just running that scan. Not really sure what I can do to lower the temps in this small space though in the laptop if it's the problem. I'm put speccy, ccleaner, and that tweaking tool on here to check it out.
All she was doing at the time was using the web browser to look at a video on youtube and before that facebook. I mean it's possible if that side vent is blocked, but it's about a 1/2 inch off the table as she had this stand for the screen it sits in so I know there's some good circulation going on there.
I may just have to unplug the thing and bring it in here, never runs it on the battery far as I can remember (and I didn't much either) and see if I can just have it drop dead or run some tests.

This may be an obvious thing You've already thought to try, but have you tried taking a can of air duster to clean the vents and using a USB powered cooling pad? The cooling pad kept my laptop going when the internal fan died completely a couple years ago.

Nothing wrong with obvious, and I've looked in there, and it looks ok, blew on it myself and a tiny bit of dust came out, but I don't currently have a can of air. I keep forgetting to buy one as one should always have one when using laptops (as I run one too.)
I may just slide by staples later or whatever's closest as I have some ebay boxes to drop off when I'm off work.
As for that tweaking tool, I'm going on every thing it does, that pre-scan took some time, but it found the reparse points ok, said something is up in the environment tables so I will have it hash that out and press on.
I remember this laptop always running a tad warm so I'm not too worried about the heat since I've had it fairly well higher running stuff like Guild Wars on it among other things but I was also using a cooler pad under the thing (she isn't.)
