Beat my first SHMUP

Post by Ack »

So I just finished my first SHMUP, Silpheed: The Lost Planet for PlayStation 2. I realize in the grand scheme it's not a very difficult one, or even very good from what I hear, but it's still a good feeling to get through it. Now I suppose I should beat it on hard mode.

I thought it was pretty damn awesome, but then again I seem to really enjoy games most people generally think are "bad". This game also made me check out Project Sylpheed for 360, it was not at all what I expected but damnit it was good.

Anyway, Congratulations ;)

Shame for not playing the Sega CD version first but congrats. The first SHMUP i completed was the Sega CD version and it puts the PS2 version to shame.

Why is the PS2 version so bad?

Its not, except, the music is TERRIBLE. The sega cd version has AMAZING music though, which is why its a shame that they didnt just remix the tunes.

If I remember correctly, the PS2 version had a lot of secondary equipment dropped as well, as well as all the drops from enemies. Basically, it's a completely stripped down version of the Sega CD game, with improved graphics. And the music is...well, honestly, I really wasn't paying attention. The voice acting is pretty bad, though certain parts of the script are pretty memorable. There's a lot of chatter going on in the game. The best description I read was that it's great for casual or beginner players, though it's not something that would really interest the hardcore SHMUP player.

I suppose at least the graphics make up to the music?

I see, thanks. I'll probably take a look.

My recommended beginner shmup is Gate of Thunder for the TG-SCD. It's easy to emulate, can be had on the Wii, and is awesome. The weapon system is relatively simple and the game is hard, but not insurmountable. It's no R-Type. But it looks good, sounds great, and plays great.

That was one of the first games I bought for my PS2 at launch, I still own it too. If you want another good one to play, go get Raiden III, also a PS2 title. I've seen it new at Gamestop for as little at $15 recently, and it is DEFINATELY worth that much, if not more. I'd be very interested in hearing what you think of that game, considering it is part of my favorite shooter series. You won't be disappointed at all, it is a very good game.
