I have to agree. I have never seen what the big deal was about these games. There are far better stealth games. There are far better 3rd person action games.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I think that entire series is pretty bad.
The stories are complete gibberish and the characters are eye-rolling levels of ridiculous. Final Fantasy had the same problem - the story for every game after VI (US III) is so convoluted as to be total nonsense.

Just so I can balance out this discussion, I love the series. You won't get me to say that they're not uneven at times, but I think Metal Gear Solid 3 is a work of art. And I enjoy the ridiculousness of the story. If you want what amounts to an anime military game, MGS was the place to be, and if you wanted realism, then you go with Splinter Cell.

MGS1 was great. MGS2 was kinda bad. MGS3 was god tier. All of the MGS on PSP are great.
I haven't played MGS4 or MGS5 yet.

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
There are games that are better at stealth, and better at action, but I'd argue that the MGS series has always been one that is greater than the sum of its parts. It's a stealth game that is inherently more "gamey" than many others, which both helps and hurts it with different crowds. The action has always been really interesting, allowing some really oddball ways to achieve your goals, but it's also betrayed by a busy control scheme that takes quite a bit to get used to (if it ever completely happens). And the stories, ridiculous as they are, appeal to some folks, and apparently that's me.
Other games might do individual elements better, but few combine them in such intriguing ways.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Couldn't agree more on that completely on both franchises. I don't even other than FF9 consider any of the 3D games part of Final Fantasy as they've all gone off the deep end. I used to joke when FF10 hit that it was Phinal Phantasy as it felt more like a phantasy star presence in some style choices than what once was. FF for me more or less just died with Nintendo being bailed out on because of how weird things got out of the gate.marlowe221 wrote:I have to agree. MGS same thing, only meddled with a few of them but there's nothing Solid about the Solid series I enjoyed much other than parts of Peacewalker and the original, only with heavy editing as Integral on PC and I can't even go back to that let alone the Twin Snakes anymore. I think it's more just fan hype over the so-called Kojima fan appointed god of gaming than anything else.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
There certainly are people that love Kojima's output, and there are those that don't. Much like many popular creators, he tends to create division amongst gamers. It's a bit how I feel when folks over-evangelize Dark Souls. It's probably how others feel when I talk up Chrono Trigger too much.
And speaking of divisive games, I thought FFIX was the worst of the PSX series. That series has always caused schisms in the fanbase, mainly because they change so much up from entry to entry.

More power to you brother. If you like the series and enjoy playing the games, you'll get no criticism from me. I'm sure I like games that wouldn't appeal to a lot of people!Sarge wrote:There are games that are better at stealth, and better at action, but I'd argue that the MGS series has always been one that is greater than the sum of its parts. I'm sure Bone and I are by far in the minority on MGS... but, hey! It's the Unpopular Gaming Opinions thread!

Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
If your main complaint about MGS is the poor stealth, you guys really oughta look at MGS V in some form. You can probably get Ground Zeroes for about $5 now. Both GZ and The Phantom Pain are incredible stealth games with the minimal amount of weirdness necessary to be called a Metal Gear game.
I don't think any game has done open world stealth successfully like those did.

Older. Not wiser.
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Ryan's right on this one, I know long-time fans of the series actually don't like the newest game because it's got almost no story, it's almost pure gameplay, and by all accounts it's the best playing game in the series.
