Phantasy Star came out just two days after Final Fantasy in Japan!

What's really wild is that Phantasy Star was one of the first JRPGs released in the West (its North American release predates that of Dragon Warrior) but wasn't received by a mass audience as it was on the SMS and not NES.

I think Phantasy Star is about even with Final Fantasy. Both are great games.

plus Nintendo Power gave away copies of Dragon Warrior.

I grew up on Dragon Warrior (ugh I feel weird calling it that now) and Final Fantasy. But when I played Phantasy Star in 2010, I declared it the better game.

Here we go, Phantasy Star Generation 1!

Played for about an hour, Alis is like level 7 or 8. Wandered about towns talking to people, wandered about Medusa Cave for a bit, and then finally hit the right sequence over in Scion to get my ROADPASS.

So this is one of those games with dialogue triggers, eh? Might have to bust a guide out if I get too stuck.

Anyways, off to get foods. Then I'll probably catch up on Lucha Underground with a buddy, but I'll be back to this later tonight.

This makes me feel old as dirt to say, but Phantasy Star was the very first JRPG I ever played. I had an older uncle who was a big time gamer, and he had all the consoles. So he got Phantasy Star in 1988 when it debuted in the USA. And I got to play it right when it came out thanks to him. I was blown away. Later that year, he gave me his copy of Phantasy Star because he had beaten it, and I had a Master System as well. Yes, I had a Master System for two years before I got a NES in 1990.

It took me about a year to beat Phantasy Star on my own, I was ten years old when I did beat it. Keep in mind there was no such thing as GameFAQs back then, and none of my friends had even heard of it. I had to figure every little thing out myself, including the dungeon layouts. I distinctly remember beating the game and how elated I was when I did.

The dark side of it though, is that Phantasy Star was so amazing, it ruined the JRPG genre for me for a long time. Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy, I played both when they came out in the USA, due to friends owning them. And I remember telling them the games were primitive and looked like crap. They didn't believe me until I showed them Phantasy Star and their jaws hit the floor. As for me, I wasn't blown away by a JRPG again until Final Fantasy VI came out.

Phantasy Star is the greatest 8-bit JRPG there ever was.

I think that DQ3 and DQ4 edge it out, but just barely. It is such a great game.

I've actually beaten the original Phantasy Star every year for the last four years or so. Wouldn't surprise me if I revisit it again in 2016. I enjoy the whole series as well, including III. III does lots of things well, including the music. The opening theme is one of the best ever heard in a video game.

Yes I believe Phantasy Star III is underrated. For example, the "getting married and having kids" thing is one aspect people praise highly about Dragon Quest V. However, Phantasy Star III does it with much more depth, across multiple generations. And Phantasy Star III did it two years before Dragon Quest V did.

I really enjoyed the original Phantasy Star, but I have almost no motivation to play 2 or 3. 4 looks interesting, but ouch, it's pricy.
