NeoGAF is great for games news. Terrible for games discussion.Snatch1414 wrote:They have an extremely high opinion of themselves over there and you can't say anything they don't agree with even if you have a point. Bunch of assholes.

PLAY KING'S FIELD.
Re: Gametrailers closing and laid off everyone
A damn shame, I used to go there all the time in the mid 2000s thanks to that being the main source for Mega64 and AVGN. Plus it was about that time I was in college and thus finally had access to broadband so I could finally watch net videos without insane buffering.
As for websites I use now, I use Gematsu for Japanese gaming news, Shoryuken for Fighting Game news, and then bigger stories like this I'll usually see YouTube recommend me a video from ReviewTechUSA or AlphaOmegaSin (Even though I'm not subscribed to these people and don't care for them) and if I'm really interested I'll look for further info online. Other websites I use are TechRaptor and The Escapist, but both of those are usually so late to the news or bloated with other types of news I don't care about that I find me going back to them far less frequently.
Used to go to Kotaku a lot way back when, but stopped when they started throwing the FGC under a bus repeatedly for minor infractions by completely unknown players yet completely ignored MLG and Starcraft players - probably because they were paying for ads and the FGC wasn't. When I left them, I went to Destructoid, which was a great place for a while, but their luciferian descent would make even Kanye West blush. And Polygon has always been suspect with their $750,000 start-up funds from Microsoft and blasting high-profile Sony and Nintendo games for being "too conventional."

NeoGAF looks like 4chan from a glance.
I never plan on looking into them much.

There's a couple neat retro threads I like to look at from time to time on NeoGAF. Other than that, I mostly can gleam news just by reading thread titles.
I remember watching AVGN at GameTrailers while I was at work years ago. Good times.

There's a contingent of about 10-20 posters in NeoGAF which have massive personal issues and try to compensate by being incredibly tribalistic and combative. Sadly, the moderation team tends to brush off this behaviour and often belongs to that group themselves.Snatch1414 wrote:I got banned a couple weeks later for disputing "facts" about the percentage of men vs. women who play video games. I argued with a couple of users for a few pages, and it was passionate but with little to no swearing or condescension.
I used to check NeoGAF to see what the gaming world was up to, but when it comes down to it, the same threads are just repeated over and over so I lost interest.
I don't think it's because of ads, it's simply a good target for Kotaku's editorial line and usual controversy-manufacturing. It's always the same proccess, one of their writers picks up a somewhat niche game, small genre or community and then, after "trying to get in" and failing because the community is bad they push a list of recommendations about how that community should organize itself.the7k wrote:Used to go to Kotaku a lot way back when, but stopped when they started throwing the FGC under a bus repeatedly for minor infractions by completely unknown players yet completely ignored MLG and Starcraft players - probably because they were paying for ads and the FGC wasn't.

Re: Gametrailers closing and laid off everyone
Most of the gaming news sites I've enjoyed were shut down. Most of the ones that remain don't do anything that I appreciate. Polygon, Kotaku, and Destructoid all feel like biased click-bait garbage instead of gaming news, and rarely have anything I'm interested in reading. NeoGaf is almost unbearable.
Either I'm just getting too old, or I'm just doing it wrong. Probably both.

I get my news from RetroCollect and my reviews from HG101. Am I doing it right?
Re: Gametrailers closing and laid off everyone
Too many of the sites now are either full of click-bait, or they're looking to push some sort of social agenda (which also serves as useful click-bait).
Re: Gametrailers closing and laid off everyone
I used to visit that site before Youtube and video in general became ubiquitous and it wasn't as easy to find game footage. It is a sad trend but the decline is real, even UK outlets have been hit by the same wave of jarnazlist bullshit. Since we're talking personal preferences, I visit Rockpapershotgun, Videogamer (mainly their Youtube channel), and various "Youtubers" who cover genres I'm interested in. The rest of the sites are on my feed reader in case I miss small games I might have not stumbled upon otherwise.
