The best way to view Legacy of Darkness is as the game the original N64 release should have been. If you own Legacy, there's really no need to own the other, unless you're going for completeness.

I really do have a hard time sorting out which classic Castlevania comes first on my list. Bloodlines usually ends up down that list, but I still like it a lot. They've all got very good things about them, and things I don't like. I think, for the most "pure" experience, there's really no other way to roll than the original. Although one could do a solo run of Castlevania III as well (I have!).

I mean, in my head, almost all of them are neck-and-neck, and depending on how I feel, that order is going to change. Bloodlines goes above the SNES Dracula X just because it feels more fair, but I love how Dracula X plays. They both go slightly below the other main games, but the fact that Konami maintained a good amount of consistency between entries is certainly laudable. :)

You know, I don't know where I'd put Simon's Quest in all this. For the longest time, it was my favorite. I think, if you catch me on the right day, I'd still say it is. :)

I like Simon's Quest a lot, it just has too many problems. The only way I'll play it these days is a hacked version that fixes some of my complaints.

^ This is the best hack I've seen for CV2. It adds SRAM saving (fuck that password!) and a map so you can tell where you are in relation to other areas. It does a bunch more than that, and if you get the patch from the official web page you can customize which option you want (or don't want). I tested it on the PowerPak to confirm that it works, and I've been meaning to play through it but haven't yet.

It had less problems if you had a guide. ;)

I will give that hack a shot, though!

That's the problem. The only way to play CV2 is with a guide, otherwise you really don't know what you're supposed to be doing! The above hack fixes dialog and adds the map, so it makes the game playable without having to resort to a guide.

I really do like the way CV2 plays though. And the daytime music (in towns and such) is awesome.

I'd be surprised if there was a Castlevania game I haven't heard of, especially a main entry.
