Oh, and make sure you defend before you attack.
I figured that was my undoing, is there any point to picking anyone else but Kamil?

Yes. Different folks do have different unlockable spells and related elements, different stat progression, and differing amounts or styles of tankiness.

For instance, the alien gets the highest HP and pure fire magic but suffers from fixed equipment. The robot gets unique spells only it gets access to, but it has limited equipment possibilities. The dwarf is like Kamil but with slower speed and higher defense. The demon gets nearly all offensive magic in the game but never gets healing and equips strong weapons but weak armor. The elf is magically gifted with ice spells and very fast but also physically weak.

Also, your character choice will affect who becomes the traitor, because only 5 of the playable choices can actually do it. If you pick one of the five, then it limits the pool of potentials.

The reason why we recommend Kamil as your main character is because he's the most well-balanced of everyone, with decent equipment and access to magic but still able to tank.

Now if only I had a hockey team to root for. But no, I'm in Atlanta...and I am not going to support the Winnipeg Jets.

7th Saga is going to be a larger undertaking than I had initially thought. Usually I just blaze my way through the first few hours of an RPG while taking notes, then do whatever research I can before playing again. This... will not lend itself well to that approach. I can see why this is a cult favorite.

Nice! As a PAL gamer who, as you know, got screwed out of Earthbound, FFVI (AKA III), Chrono Trigger and had to put up with poor PAL conversions, it's nice to hear about some of the games we were lucky to get and North America didn't.

I left him a snarky YT comment but it's surely buried by now.

And nice PAL vid, drunk. Whirlo is actually a Valkyrie no Bōken game though I think many of the references may have been dropped in the European release.
