Yeah, was going to offer my $.02, but I have no idea how it works if you have phone service as well :? . I've been meaning to get my own router and ditch my ISP's garbage that they make me rent. I'll pick up a Motorola Surfboard eventually.

Personally, I would stay with discrete components, rented or not. I'm one in the situation of having phone service as part of what my cable modem does, so I just use the one provided by the ISP. Either way, that one item does what it does and provides you an uplink.

For the router portion, you have a lot of options, from building your own, to a wide array of products. Good ones should have little issue doing what you've described provided your connection is sufficient. It's increasingly common to get multiple wifi radios even, and if you really care you could investigate the controls provided (or what third party firmware is supported) to prioritize traffic.

So, you may actually benefit from a new router or access point too, depending on what else you're connecting to it. Either way, if you keep things separate, you can always look at that part of the setup separately, and upgrade it when desired.

Back when I had phone service as part of my cable package I had a combo internet modem + phone box, and then a separate box for the TV. Now I'm just down to the cable model and the TV box, with the modem being a dumb modem (no built in wireless or anything) and then I have a separate wireless router. The more complicated the modem the more likely you are to run into an issue (like I did) where the modem starts blocking ports or other pieces of traffic and you have no ability to get in and correct it.

I know with TWC cable, if I bought my own modem, I'd still have to have their modem for phone service.
Marurun is correct, you will have to use the isps owned equipment if you are doing a pots line. It is because there is a SIP trunk that terminates in that equipment, it needs the handshake back with the NOC and has less tolerance for issues than say a data connection. Your jitter skyrockets on your internet connection, not a huge deal. The network will regulate it back down within a few minutes. But if your Jitter skyrockets on a phonecall, it drops.

I had a 3 in 1 when I had a pots line and still used my own router, I just disabled theirs in the config.

This thread only talks about current computer hardware. I've been wanting to talk about older computer hardware, maybe DOS through XP.

What do you guys think? Create a separate thread for retro computers, or just use this thread?

Make a better current computer, then visualize the older computers. Problem solved.

Visualize, or virtualize? I'm afraid neither will scratch my itch.

Headset suggestions? I have been using a Logitech Clearchat Stereo headset for oooh the past seven years. It is been repaired a few times and is currently held together with gaffers tape, electrical tape, and solder. But I have a budget of $100 to spend and would like to upgrade. I do not have a dedicated sound card, so any suggestions.

Other important parts:
- Wireless is not a draw, but not a detraction
- This will be used for gaming only
- Surround sound is preferred
- Logitech is favored, but the G430 is an ugly blue...
- Prefer black or red
- USB or two TRS, it does not matter which
- I am not a fan of the add on mic systems like the Antlion
