Dwarf Fortress fans?

Post by fastbilly1 »

Anyone else enamored with Dwarf Fortress? It has been mentioned in the past, but we have never had a topic about it.

For those who for some reason have never heard of Dwarf Fortress. Imagine a game that is an RTS, the Sims, Dungeons and Dragons, and Simcity all combined to make the ultimate open ended game. It is a game where you can have massive LOTR like battles of Dwarfs, Elves, Humans, Goblins, and Kobolds. Or you can accidentally awaken a fellbeast that will come through and destroy your entire community. Or simply watch as a thousand year old Bronze Colossus that is worshiped as a god, become a vampire and go into the ocean to fight sea monsters. BUT it looks like this:

Dwarf Fortress is the most complicated game I have ever played, yes moreso than Falcon 4.0. My first game I did not even make it through the first month - my Dwarves were visited by a caravan who had a caged Ape that escaped and killed everyone. In recent games, I have had my fortress survive for a year or two, usually dying of starvation. I have played this game on and off for the last decade, and still never made it through more than a year of ingame time. It is in forever beta but is always being updated by the sole programmer. Best of all it is free.

Recently I have been using it to generate worlds, then I go through and read random legends. That has been equally entertaining to me as playing the actual game. It is like reading incomplete histories from a lost world the size of New Jersey.

So anyone else got the DF bug?

I have long been interested in it but never played it.

I think there are skins for it now that make it more aesthetically appealing?

There are skins, and tools to help newbies. I use the Lazy Newbs Pack to install and run the game:

There is also an adventure mode that I have not figured out how to play...

Do you really need all that to play this ASCII game?

No, you dont need any of it (well apart from the first item obviously). It is just a one stop shop for everything you could possibly need. And as you get use to playing the game, some of those become very useful. I use the Legends viewer all the time and Phoebus is my preferred graphical upgrade.
