In my experience, Soma Bringer is more fun than both, and offers the same kinda gameplay.

Psssst.....

There's a hack and slash dungeon-crawling action-RPG with optional multiplayer that destroys all those mentioned. It's called Phantasy Star Online.

I couldnt really get into PSO.

I will say I am loving what Path of Exile brings and Grim Dawn is promising, but Diablo spawned its own genre ot sub-genre.

Let's be honest though. Have you actually played Soma Bringer?

Actually, yes! I will concur that it is great. It's also on my short list of DS games I plan to import someday.

I played the beta of Grim Dawn and didn't really love it. I mean, it wasn't bad. But it didn't suck me enough that I like "cared" if I played it or not.

PSO is fantastic though.

While that Star Ocean was a disappointment, it doesnt belong with those others.

I loathe that particular Star Ocean game.

Anyway, I suppose I should put together a "real" list of some of my favorite RPGs. Some of what is on this list may surprise you guys, but I really did enjoy playing all of these more than most others I've gone through in the genre. This will be in no order:

Final Fantasy 6
Baldur's Gate
Diablo
Final Fantasy Tactics
Castle of the Winds
Lufia II
Mega Man Legends
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Xenogears
Shadowrun Returns

Neither does Shining Force EXA, unless you count its crime as not being an SRPG. I'd also (sorta) argue that Aidyn Chronicles isn't actively good, but it's not completely broken like Hoshi wo Miro Hito. That game belongs in a tier all by itself.

Also, no Chrono Trigger on your greats list? Shame. Shaaaaaame. ;)

(In all seriousness, that's a really solid list!)
