Suikoden is great, but 2 is one of my top 10 RPGs. It is on my list of games to replay, as I also didn't recall that part of the game.Exhuminator wrote:I'm sure that Suikoden II eventually gets good, I mean way too many people piss their pants over it for that not to be the case.
I just didn't have the patience at the time. Literally the first thing the game does is make you wander around a fort cleaning up messes on the floor with a rag. I mean, I get why it does that, to show how far you come eventually from being a janitor. But really why make the player actually play the janitor part? Just say they are a janitor and kick it off with a castle siege or something.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I've never played a Suikoden game. I wasn't gaming much at all during the 5th gen, and by the time I went back to play "collector catch-up" the prices of those first two games were inflated to the point that I said "meh, I don't need this stuff." Screenshots never looked that compelling to me. And I've always heard that there are something like 108 recruitable characters? That makes me think "collectathon." Which makes me cringe.
Now I do incidentally own parts IV and V cuz I found them locally for cheap. Haven't touched 'em though.

2. Tactics Ogre
3. Baldur's Gate 2
4. Shining Force 2
5. Suikoden 2
6. Mass Effect series (If I had to pick one, then the 1st)
7. Ogre Battle
8. PS Torment
9. FF Tactics
10. Pillars of Eternity
This is tougher than I thought. I feel like a Diablo title, probably 3 for me, a Fire Emblem title (either Path of Radiance or Awakening), Chrono Trigger, BG1 (if not included with 2), Shining Force I and III, Phantasy Star IV, Dragon Age Origins, and a Fallout title deserve mention. I think after 7, the titles I just mentioned and those listed are interchangeable. I am still probably missing a game or 2.
I could also say the top 4 could be shuffled depending on my mood and I wouldnt have a problem with it.

John, I feel like our tastes in RPG's are way more similar than I realized before.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I think you'd love them. Most of the characters are picked up naturally and you gain levels fairly quick. So changing them out is easy. Obviously many characters are similar to others and some of the characters are shop vendors and NPCs and such for your stronghold.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I've never played a Suikoden game. A few require a little bit of work, searching, sidequests etc... to find, but not an annoying amount.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Suikoden was my first PS1 RPG back in the day and I loved it.
I concur, it's def something Bone would enjoy.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Ah nice! I am definitely a tactical RPG fan. And ranking jrpgs, srpgs, and wrpgs together is tough. Also tough, is that some of these I haven't played in awhile, and am basing this off of my enjoyment of them at the time.noiseredux wrote:John, I feel like our tastes in RPG's are way more similar than I realized before.
I also left off MMOs and Xcom, as Xcom feels a bit too unique to mix in.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I would not consider XCOM an RPG either. But yeah, you seem to like similar titles within sub-genres as me as well. Like, I love tactical strategy stuff. And I'm not a huge WRPG guy but I adored Pillars and Dragon Age Origins. For JRPG's I'm huge into the Shining games and Phantasy Star series.

While I don't agree with every entry, this is a highly respectable list.Jmustang1968 wrote: 1. FF6

8. PS Torment
9. FF Tactics
10. Pillars of Eternity
My own list would be something like...
Vagrant Story
Front Mission DS
King's Field 4
Phantasy Star 1
Fallout 1
SMT: Nocturne
Final Fantasy XII
Ys Origin
Brandish: The Dark Revenant
Gargoyle's Quest*
Of course that list could change depending on how I feel. Depending on how the rest of the Mass Effect series turns out for me, I might add one on of those games in that list for instance.
*Yes I consider this an RPG. It has all the criteria.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
