Steel Battlion Owners Unite

Post by Ghudda »

Image

As a new Steel Battalion owner, I wanted to start a thread to see who all in the community owns the game and/or is interested in playing some only games.

Interested to hear from both seasoned veterans of SB to maybe get some tips or insight on the Steel Battalion community as a whole, as well as from people who either just recently picked the game up or own the game but have just played very little of it.

Feel free to please post useful interweb resources for the game.

It would be fun to get a group together on the forums to play semi-regularly online via Xlink Kai or other similar tunneling service. I'm completely new to the game, so I could benefit from playing with both experienced and inexperienced players.

Who all in the community owns/plays Steel Battalion?

That video helped me learn how to play.

Ive not played it in a few years, but it is a blast if you can get a handle on all the controls.

Awesome, that video is going to be very useful. I tried looking up tutorial/intro stuff, but only got garbage videos for the Kinect game. After watching a few "professional" SB matches from the PAX tournaments, I've become aware that the movement mechanics, while difficult to master, must make this game feel so rewarding to be good at. This game is so much more fast-paced than I originally thought. I just hope that the initial skill-hurdles don't kill my motivation.

If you ever feel like dusting off your controller and playing online, let me know.

I randomly obtained a copy of Mechwarrior 4 for the PC from a thrift store not too long ago and just became aware that there are drivers/controller mappings to use the SB controller with it. Has anyone played Mechwarrior 4 (or any PC game for that matter) with the battalion controller? I need to get an oXbox to USB adapter.

Did you see the Steel Battalion setup at PAX South? It was sick seeing 10 people playing all at once. They even had a dedicated staff member at the station teaching folks how to play.

Yes! I was able to play a few rounds this year. The quality of work that goes into that setup is awesome, and I'd like to know who organizes it at each of the PAX events. They're definitely one of the few people keeping the game alive/relevant in the public eye. I didn't catch any of the Steel Battalion tournament this year, but I've watched videos of the tournament from previous years/other PAX. Did you have a chance to play at all, 8bit?

It's a pretty small detail, but I was impressed that they put the effort into using component video on all of the displays instead of composite

Ghudda you need to go to a Mechcorps event.

They haul up to 16 Battletech pods to conventions.

I play atleast one round at Dragoncon every time I can.

Looking into SB setups, it looks like another set of controls is up to $300 now. That is going to make getting another one dicey.

I REALLY want to add Steel Battalion to my collection at some point. What's the game and controller going for these days?

No kidding, I had no idea this thing even existed, it's amazing. Went to the website and saw they're based out of Texas, got excited, but they're in Houston, so not very close to me. There are constantly things coming up that are making a lengthy trip to Houston worthwhile, so I hope to be able to try this out at some point. Curious to know what the setup is like control wise, so I'll look into it later. I'm sure there are YouTube vids.

I just won a CIB set via eBay auction for $150 shipped. It's the second revision (blue) model, but it came with all the original packaging, etc. Don't let the BIN's fool you, auctions rarely go above $200. Also: If you don't mind getting a Japanese set, you can get a CIB set on Amazon for ~$130.

I'm not very good at judging future market patterns, but I think it's a pretty solid time to pick up sets still.
