How is your Game Gear gaming going?

A gamegear on TV would be like the ultimate Sega Master System. Better color palettes, and more readily available game cartridges.

All except the resolution anyway. I'd rather have more screen real-estate than better colors, especially with platformers.

I also enjoy the two Phantasy Star titles on GG. Any of you duders play those?

Tried to play the adventure style game once and lost interest pretty fast.
I'll give them both a fair shake when I finally get my gg everdrive set up. I intend on organizing everything by genres and such and don't want to have to keep taking the sd card out a thousand times (heard it can't take the wear and tear).
Got to get it right the 1st time.

Otherwise, my actual collection of carts is pretty satisfying, so there's no shortage of what to play. I figure I still have a dozen more to secure before I'm completely happy with my set.

I'd be very interested in Phantasy Star GG games... but I mean they're pretty unplayable if you don't read Japanese, right?

Well, yeah, if you plan to play them on original hardware. Both have translation patches tho.

Adventure is, well, an adventure game with plenty of text to read.

Gaiden is more of a traditional JRPG. It's pretty streamlined and plays more like Dragon Warrior than the original Phantasy Star.

I also can't imagine playing a lot of the fast paced action games/shmups on the stock screen, though. I'm going to look into getting an LCD replacement kit off of AtariAge forums (depending on the cost). The adapter board for the replacement LCD features RGB output directly from the board, which would make getting video out super convenient.

I'm assuming you're talking about the kit made by McWill? The work he did on that is amazing. Are you planning on doing the VGA out connection as well?

If you can do those two mods, I'd be delighted to pay you to do them on my Game Gear. If you're interested of course. Just throwing that out there.

Yeah, I'm referring to McWill's board! I definitely trust the guys work, especially since he's the go to person for Atari Lynx LCD mods. I didn't realize that the GG board has a built in scanline generator, either. I did know about the RGB output from the LCD board, which definitely makes the board worth the asking price. Though VGA is great, I'd probably want to install some sort of DIN connector and output the RGB via SCART to my PVM. VGA is great, but I don't have the ideal monitors for it. Basically, still trying to work out what kind of connection I would want.

I'm pretty confident that I could do the mod, since there's pretty solid documentation, and I've soldered to surface mounted components in the past, but I wouldn't be confident enough to sell it as a service. The price is still a bit steep for my budget, but if I do end up getting it and installing it in my GG, I'll let everyone know how it goes and if I would be willing to install it for someone else.

How much would you charge for that? I've been meaning to replace my Game Gear's capacitors, but I don't know when I'll have the time to do it, now that I have two kids. The sound is now completely dead (speaker and headphone jack) and the screen is getting washed out.

Game Gear was at one point (between NES and Genesis) my main system. Now, sadly, it's one of the systems (along with 32X) that I have a hard time justifying keeping. I used to have at least ten games, then sold a bunch in the late '90s, then all but three a few years ago. I was down to Sonic 1, Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya, and Ecco: The Tides of Time. A couple years ago, I picked up Land of Illusion, at which point the headphone jack still worked. Last week I bought Jurassic Park, which I enjoyed when I rented it as a kid, but never owned. Sadly, the headphone jack no longer works.

I, too, would love to have a consolized Game Gear, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I think it would be great to have a Game Gear and get some portable Sega gaming going, but GEEZ these things seem to require a lot of maintenance...
