Strangely enough that promise didn't apply for JT or Ack's brother.
Because the Steam service didn't go away. That's what the promise is about, not "I fucked up my account and now it don't work!"
When a game is on GOG.com and Steam there is no compelling reason to get the Steam version. DRM-free > DRM.
The Steam client is amazing compared to Galaxy, and the general game management is so much better on Steam. Everything I can get on both I get on Steam. The one spot where it would have been nicer to have the GOG version is for the original Doom games, since Valve changed how those launched which made it a pain to get it to launch the source port version instead from the shortcut.

Keep in mind that Galaxy only recently launched, and is still in active development. Give it time and it'll catch up, if not surpass.

Steam has a lot of perks yes, but at the end of the day it's just a DRM infused rental service. If that works for you guys, okay then. But that service model is never gonna fly on the back of my gaming dollar.

With GOG you also have the advantage of being able to download the games sans client if you want which is nice for multiplayer games I want to share with my girlfriend's PC.

If a game is on both platforms I'll go with Steam if there's a compelling reason to do so like better or extra content or deeply discounted sales, otherwise GOG is where I check first.

It's no different than console-exclusive digital purchases. I assume no one here completely opposed to Steam has bought any of those?

Steam is indeed what you say. But if it's the only place to get a game, then that's where my money's going to go. To be fair, though, the vast majority of my Steam games are bundle purchases. I think my last "legit" purchase was Castle in the Darkness, and I had a multi-year gap buying anything off the Steam store.

I have fully backed up my entire GOG library, of course, in the event that they go away for whatever reason.

One difference there being all my 3DS eShop games support offline mode.

So does Steam, actually. I use it quite a bit.

Not every Steam game supports offline mode is my point.

Is it really fair to hold it against them that every single game doesn't support it, though? Most do.

You asked if I'd bought any console or handheld digital storefront games. I have, I've bought 3DS eShop games. So when you're making a direct comparison against eShop game perks versus Steam game perks, yes the comparison is warranted. Not every Steam game supports offline mode. Every eShop game does. That's one of the reasons why your precedent isn't a totally apples to apples analogy, IMO.
